admin or mod, please help!

I need someone's help. I don't use gnutella, but I keep
getting hits from my firewall saying that a gnutella computer
has attempted to access my computer. I mean LOTS of hits. How do I keep gnutella users from trying to get into my computer?
I have no files to share! T.I.A.

annoyed August 11th, 2002 05:55 PM

none

Thanks, Peerless, I'll look into that...I have never used gnutella,
last month I just suddenly started getting these hits, in excess
of 100 a day...very, well, annoying....

Could it be that you are saying that you are not using Gnutella but are using Bearshare or Limewire or Xolox or Shareaza or any number of P2P programs .... They all work on the Gnutella network and would cause the response you are getting...

backmann August 11th, 2002 09:09 PM

I've seen this problem before, you are not the only one. My guess would be -as I have not seen any prooved explanation- is that somebody who had your IP before has used Gnutella and you are getting the traffic that he should get, as somebody might be trying to finish a download or the IP might be in somebody's cache.

What kind of connection do you have?

Thanks, guys...no, I haven't used any file-sharing programs
since a flirtation with Napster a few years back. That was with
a different isp, though, it could hardly be the prob. I'm on Roadrunner now, backmann, and THEY certainly couldn't be
less concerned, though I can hardly blame THEM...

Peerless, I think mods and admins are no robots.
We (or at least Paradog) have to eat, sleep, go to toilet, go to work or school and care about our friends and family too.
(Yes its hard to believe, but its true! )

There are other abilities for admins and mods other than those. As Paradog said, we are not robots, we can't be here all the time. That's why we are more than one, and I have to say that they are doing a great work. Generally, mods and admins know a lot about Gnutella.

You proved Peerless's (his/her) point by not being there for the users.... Sorry to bring this your attention... but Peerless was right... like it or not. Deal with it!

In fact... did you all suggest anything of value to Annoyed? NO! Not all all! You failed the users once again!

You only responded to a "shot to the ego". How is this of any help to the user?

The mods seem to seek out only the insults to the ego as of late... and leave the true users to deal with the problems of the new users, and anyone else for that matter... to ourselves... they are to busy being 'insulted'... and thinking up ho-hum replies to our quest to have REAL help in these forums.

(one of these days, my comments are gonna get me booted from these forums. mine is no longer a role of helping... but to get those that are SUPPOSED to be here to help... to actually help.)

Peerless was right!... and so am I!

Since I'm an evil mod.... [edit] YOU!
Tell you what, I'm not a [edit] robot who is [edit] getting paid for serving other users, I help if I can but DO [edit] remember that I am not getting paid a [edit] dime for this work.
Its fun for me to help and discuss some Gnutella matters but I dont want any [edit] guy (not you, of course not) to tell me that I have a *duty* and I have to think collective for all.
I'm a 16 year old guy and no robot or Kofi Anan so dont come with this [edit] of the ego [edit]. Of course I'm sometimes selfish.

You cant [edit] assume that we are a Microsoft service hotline, you dont pay a dime and we dont get any money.
If I'm getting paid for helping, then you could blame me, but [edit] [edit] not now.

Vi Snakkes,
bpmax

PS: Peerless, I didnt meant to offend you. By the way, where do you have your avatar from? Looks quite Matrix style :)

backmann August 15th, 2002 09:27 AM

@annoyed

Sorry, although I've seen roadrunner a lot of times I don't know what kind of connection it is. Dial Up? Cable? DSL? Sattelite? Try to change your IP adress if you can, and if it's what I think, that should fix it.

@Peerles

I didn't mean to oofend you either. :)

@bpmax

I try to help whenever I can, but I'm no Gnutella god. Before I became a mod, I was a simple user just like you. I just tried to explain something to Peerless, I didn't take it as an insult to my ego, and if I had, I usually wouldn't reply. I'm not justifying Paradog's reaction, which I don't share, but you made yourself a whole movie out of nothing.

At the top of the league of my primary concerns I would include family, friends and making enough money to pay the bills (and buy toys). Thinking about these things provoke the full range of human emotions and occupy endless hours of deep reflection.

However, if I were to situate this file-sharing forum, or what people write on it , in my list of life priorities I can assure you that - however interesting some of the threads may be - it would be WAY down.

But, hey, I'm just talking about myself. Each to his own. If others choose to lose sleep over what is said here or people who post here, it's their privilege. Who am I to dictate what's world-shatteringly important and what isn't? :)

annoyed August 16th, 2002 05:11 AM

Thanks again, guys, I'm trying to get RR to change my IP, and
in the meantime I changed my firewall preferences so I
wouldn't be notified every time my computer was solicited.
D'oh! I should have done that earlier, and then I wouldn't have
been so...annoyed;)
btw, backmann, roadrunner is cable:)
also btw, hope I didn't start a major fight....

Hmmm... strange. Cable users have static IP adresses, so I'm starting to doubt if the problem was that somebody had your IP before. Anyway, I still recommend you to change it.

OK. So that should be the problem.

Peerless... I believe you are correct as far as the US goes... but many users are not in the US... I have no idea whether they use DHCP or fixed IP addresses internationally... Backmann may very well be correct within the scope of his location.

Umm...aren't mods the ones that are supposed to keep threads from going off-topic like this - not contributing to it? Of course, the worst part is, I'm a mod on another forum, and I just helped this go even farther off-topic

Yes and no...

we have not the time to watch for off-topic posts. And I think nobody really care about this...

Yeah, I was just teasing anyway :) = and in relation to the original question, it sounds to me like your firewall is already blocking the attempts so you should be fine. Many firewalls will give you the option to block and ignore (for logging/reporting) connection attempts for particular ports, so I'd imagine that that's what you'd want to do if you don't want to be bothered with seeing the connection attempts on 6346
