R.I.A.A question

I have been with Verizon for a little over a month. I recently found out that the R.I.A.A is sending subpoenas to individuals who have mp3's stored on there computer in a shared folder that Kazaa defaults to and is targeting many Verizon subscribers. A couple weeks ago after finding out about the subponeas and Verizon and the fact that it was wrong to download music, I had my computer checked for these files, I found that my children had Kazaa installed and had downloaded music files into the shared folder, I had the Kazaa program and all downloaded files removed asap. The Verizon subscription is in my name, I was wonder because it is in my name, if my children would be off the hook if I did receive a subponea, I sure wouldn't want my children to get into any trouble because they didn't know they were doing anything wrong, I explained what I learned about the downloading of music to them, after the fact. I feel I let them down as a parent by not knowing enough about the internet myself before subscribing. Is there anyway they can trace the person (not just the isp address subscriber which is me) who is actually online, I wouldn't think so, but I am not that computer savvy. I am thinking about getting rid of the internet completely, although I don't want to deprive my children of anything because of my ignorance of the internet and laws that apply. Any thoughts on this matter and how I should handle this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks allot.

I've heard of (only) one case where it was asked to an ISP the identity of one internet user who was uploading 6 GB a day.

It is not advisable to get rid of the internet because of this. There are millions and millions of users who are sharing files now. This is not to worry about.

If you don't want to show your IP adress, I think the new Morpheus lets you work behind a router. Be careful of the spyware that comes with it though.

What to do?

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what can be done to protect yourself from the RIAA? What works and what doesn't work? Is using Norton's Security, Zone Alarm, PeerGuardian, etc. going to accomplish anything? What about any realistic suggestions if you have received a legal notice from the RIAA?

Block the known bad IP addresses.
Don't use Kazaa.
Don't download/share newest or most popular copyrighted content.
Share as much good non-copyrighted and open source content as you can.
Don't give up on p2p or stop sharing. The more of us there are the stronger we are. :)
