Very Confused

Hi........
I am totally and utterly confused. Although I would love to be able to work smoothly with technology I can't. I just don't understand it. I was wondering if someone could explain something to me.

What exactly is a firewall? Do i need one?

I was reading some of the other messages and it was talking about IP address' or something, what exactly is a IP address and is it dangerous if someone knows it?

This must sound really stupid to you guys, but please help me!
