Ability to block "fake" files (adverts)? I understand that we can block specific hosts and also content to lessen the possibility of downloading bogus files. These methods however are not without drawbacks (i.e. dynamic IP for host blocking and actually filtering out content you may be searching for - .jpg or .wmv files). I know this is geting into the dodgy area of censorship, however, given the vast amount of traffic containing this "spam", would it be possible for the network to identify files that are clearly adverts and flag them? That way, an option could be included in "filters" to say "Don't download obvious annoying adverts" (maybe not in those exact words!). |
Filters such as keyword filters do have their limits. I don't know which client p2p app you're using but for LW (which is the one I know), you can add words such as .wmv & .jpg to block those adverts. But, if you're searching for those types of files then you need to remove those filters during that time. After a while you recognise the size of these spam files, & that they originate from T1 sources & are generally in the greatest number. I think that says it all really. Apparently LW for example is thinking about introducing a size filter (I've been pushing them to do it for well over 6 months) to help with this cause plus help people get more accurate search results. There's other p2p apps out there that use size filters. eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=33325 |
Re: Ability to block "fake" files (adverts)? The thing that bugs me why in hell people even join to a p2p network just to dump fake files and computer bugs a law needs to passed on them for a change maybe even a list of were they live and there computers url numbers and see how they like it for a change Quote:

adverts are a pain this one seems to come up no matter what you put in the search, as if it adapts itself to anything you put in no matter how random like "riueruiuenvei" as said you get to know the file before you download it one file is a 37.2kb jpg the other is a 42.2kb jpg theres even a 107.2kb wmv file for it and lots of users have all 3 types and the main client is an unbroseable t1 heres that fugging file: http://flightsims.info/datas/users/1...dreamscape.jpg |
Not 100% on the subject but always helpful to know: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=31862 |
I agree this is what im searching the forums for, whatever i type in, there seems to be a image file or movie file with the exact name, or with underscores between each letter. This is starting to **** me off. I tried "My name is Puppet" and i got two: m_y_n_a_m_e_i_s_p_u_p_p_e_t M_y_N_a_m_e_I_s_P_u_p_p_e_t I downloaded both these files, knowing full well what they were (i have had previous experience with these things) and they were ipod contest offers..... Of course, if you are looking for a song, you would know that these file are not what you are looking for, but if you are looking for, say, a music video, these things can be veeery annoying. Is there a way to quickly and easily get rid of these (I didnt really understand what u said above)? |
If you read the link I gave above you'd know the best thing to do is either ignore them or filter them out. They become obvious after a while b/c they're always the same size. |
