Downloading Application Programs

Hi everyone new guy so bare with me.

I want to download some application programs to use on my Mac, is it just the case of downloading then installing or do i need a serial number or anything (sorry if dumb question)

Oh also only have a 2hr online window, then i have to re-connet is there anyway that the download wont be interupted or does it just start up from the same place.

Thanks for any help cause really need some programs for my university work.

Many thanks and sorry again if these questions have been asked before

Software

If the software you download is freeware, then you won't need anything. Just install it and run it.

If it is shareware, then you will be able to use it just for x days, then they'll ask you to buy it or to enter a serial number.
