Ok this is a dumb Q but do those hosts work for BearShare too? I can't seem to get any hosts on BearShare, but other people see me and download my files. I can't bring anything up in search on it either yet, I just dl it yesterday.

did you try searching for somethign common?

you just need to enter one word like

madonna

into the thing.. no .mp3's just word.. if you get somethign back then the search works.. right now gnutella has a problem with moochers so it will be hard to find.. i wrote bearshare and they said they are going to fix that.. with version 2 next week sometime.. it will support the ability to block users that are trying to download your stuff from the web.. because thats where most of the download requests come from.. so gnutella should be working alot better once everyone upgrades to that.

Dear dumbQ:

Make sure the "Keep at least" box is checked on the Hosts page.

And to the person that asked about where to get IP addresses:

You are using outdated software, get a modern client. I recommend BearShare.

thank you very much for your help vinnie- checking that box was the simple fix i was looking for.

has that upgraded version of bearshare been released yet? i really dig bearshare over the original gnutella. it shows the clients of the people downloading off you, i assume those with java 1.1.8 are the ones from the web?

Vinnie January 1st, 2001 09:01 AM

Actually, no. I originally thought Java 1.1.8 was a browser request, but after testing with the Reflector I realized that Java 1.1.8 is the User-Agent reported by programs written in Java that use the built-in Java support for HTTP requests.
