what JVM exactly does limeiwre want? i installed this program called kaffee and limewire dosent see it. sooooo.... what to do?

You need either Sun's or IBM's Java Runtime Environments. Kaffee is crap.

I've downloaded everything and it still says that I don't have VM installed. do I need to setup LimeWire from the VM rpm directory? By the way i'm using j2re-1_4_0_01-fcs-linux-i386.rpm as my javaVM so tell me what's wrong.

i think i have the same problem. do you need to run a configure command on java_vm, or something? (i'm new to linux, if you haven't figured that out already!)

more details:
i also sent a form to java tech support because i downloaded j2re-1_4_0_01-linux-i586.rpm.bin, but running "./" produced the file j2re-1_4_0_01-fcs-linux-i386.rpm, contrary to the installation guide at: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/jre/install-linux.html

i don't know if that is the right file. sun sent me an email saying they're looking into it and implied they have to ask download.com to check the file.

i ran rpm on the file and it seemed to install the 1.4.0.01 version of java. but running "sh ./LimeWireLinux.bin" said i didn't have java vm installed. i added "/usr/java/bin" to my path (and yes, java_vm is in fact there) but i got the same response from LimeWire.

p.s. i'm running mandrake 8.2, if it matters.

I've just helped a friend with a similar problem. The j2re-1_4_0_01-fcs-linux-i386.rpm file is okay. Check that it's installed okay by typing in "rpm -q j2re" at the console. This should say what version of j2re is installed.

Right, as well as having the java RUNTIME environment installed, you also need the java DEVELOPMENT kit installed as well. Check to see you have this by typing "locate bin/java" and/or "locate jdk" at the console. You should find a directory that has the following applications: "java", "javac", "jar", "appletviewer" etc. the list goes on.

If you can't find these applications (or you think you might have older versions of these) go to http://java.sun.com and download the latest version of java SDK.

Once you've installed this, go to your console and type "which java". Hopefully you should get the name of the newly installed "java" application ("/usr/java/jre1.3.1_02/bin/java" or something like that).

The reason (I think) you're getting the java VM type problem is because the LimeWire install script is looking for the "java" application and it can't find it.

If you can use the "java" command you should be able to install LimeWire.

BUT, are you sure you need the SDK? i saw another post (i think here) that explicitly stated that you only needed the SDK if you planned on writing java code. it seems crazy to me that a 21MB download isn't sufficient to run java applications under linux, but a 5 MB download is sufficient for windows. after much frustration, i booted to windows and installed the whole thing (limewire and java) in 30 mins. now after a two hour download of the runtime environment, i need to go download the 40MB SDK?

<rant> as a new linux user, there's a lot to like, but installing software has been extremely frustrating. the whole reason, i'm installing limewire is that i tried to install gtk+ gnutella. first i needed to install gcc to compile gtk+ gnutella. then i found i needed gtk. then i found i needed glib. at least they were all on the CDs. even after i installed all these programs and libraries, gtk can't find glib and without configuring gtk, I can't install gtk+ gnutella. i had set up limewire on a previous windows machine, so i thought, that can't be too hard, but now i'm having the same kind of problems. i won't even get started with my adventures in trying to install wine (still unsuccessful). it sure has a way of making a fairly intelligent person feel like a moron. it shouldn't take days to install a fairly simple piece of software and i notice that even more experienced linux users in these forums have had a lot of the same problems; it's just that they usually have enough experience to figure out what to try when the default options don't work. </rant>

well, i made a stupid mistake. i added usr/java/bin to my path when i should have added usr/java/j2re1.4.0_01/bin. now running limewire perfectly. anyone else who reads this, note that i didn't need to install the java SDK!

Oh...

I feel like a bit of a moron too for saying you need SDK. I know what you mean about installing things being difficult. I've been a hardcore user of linux for about the past year but I still have to give up on trying to install things after banging my head against my desk for 10hours.
