What is OGG file format

Hi, I cam across a set of .ogg files, what are these? I saw on another post that you can convert from MP3 to ogg, can you the the reverse?

ogg files

ogg files are similar to mp3 files. Read about them at http://www.ogg.org/ogg/vorbis/index.html
You should be able to play them in XMMS if the libvorbis audio plugin is installed.
