what to do with "can't find libjava.so"?

When trying to compile limewire on my redhat 7.1 system, I get

"can't find libjava.so"

no matter which installation method I try.

Can anyone suggest what I need to do here? I think I've installed the java runtime env correctly, but maybe not?
