Problems Installing LimeWire on Linux Mandrake 8.0: Font Problems

Hi all.

When I try to install the Linux version of LimeWire, I get several error messages such as the following:

Font specified in font.properties not found [--symbol-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific]

I'm pretty sure this has to with the Java implementation in Linux not being able to find the fonts that it expects.

What do I do?

What JVM are you using?

We recommend using the Java2 Runtime Environment, v 1.3.1 available from www.java.sun.com. The IBM version should also work quite well.

If you are already using one of these, then there may very well be an issue that we are unaware of.

I also tried to install LimeWire 1.6 on Mandrake 8.0 and got the same error message regarding a missing symbol font.

I successfully installed Sun's JRE 1.3.1 prior to attempting to install LimeWire 1.6.

I get the same "error" messages in Red Hat, but the app runs fine. Whatever your problem is, it's nothing to do with the fonts.

Same font error....

I have Java 1.3.1 as suggested from Sun and I get the same fony erros when I try to run the LimeWire application. I have no problem using the application but the errors do pop up in the terminal window when it starts.

I am using Red Hat 7.1

It does look like this is an issue with LimeWire requesting a specific font that is not available on the system for whatever reason.

Do any of the fonts in LimeWire look particularly odd? Did anyone get this issue with previous LimeWire's? If not, does anyone remember if the fonts in LimeWire 1.6 look any different from the fonts in previous versions?

I am using Red Hat 7.1.. I have recieved font error messages in every limewire I have used (1.4, 1.6, and now 1.6b) but that has never prevented the application from running, and the fonts have never appeared odd to me. Every font LimeWire tried to call recieved an error. So I don't know exactly what font it is using, but it's working and it looks fine.

Glad to hear it's not a new issue on your machine (since otherwise it might indicate that I'm steadily losing my mind!!).

Can anyone else verify that they experienced this with older LimeWire versions as well?

Thanks very much to all.

Unfortnately, it's not just a font problem; LimeWire actually hangs during the install on Mandrake 8.

Following the font errors, a small, empty window appears in the center of the screen and, after some disk activity, the install stops. No other error messages appear.

I finally had success installing LimeWire on Mandrake 8.

First, I downloaded LimeWire 1.6b. Next, I ran the install script, which again generated the same font errors and created the small window, just a few pixels on a side, in the middle of the screen (it's barely noticeable). I was able to grab the bottom right corner of the window, though, and the window popped out to full size, revealing the installer options.

LimeWire then proceeded to install and run without a problem and seems to be working great so far.
