Default *Very* slow launching (like 4 minutes...)

Hi all,

Just thought I'd give LimeWire a try on two machines on my home network.

Both machines are running SuSE 9.0, Java version 1.4.2..

On one machine, a three-year old Athlon 1.1GHz / 256MB RAM, LimeWire starts and runs very well.

On the newer machine, Athlon XP3000, 512MB RAM, attempting to launch LW using any of the scripts supplied results in a very long wait (4 minutes..) before the LW splash screen and the program starting... Then it runs perfectly.

An internet connection was / is present in both cases... Any ideas??

Thanks!

This has happened to me on occasion and is usually an X problem. Make sure X does not display "cannot find own hostname - your system is severely misconfigured" when it starts up.

Also, are other java applications slow?

If that is not the case, try re-installing limewire and/or java.

hi zab,

thanks for the suggestions.

i've just re-installed java, then re-installed limewire. still no good..

i'll have to look further into the possible X problems - this is one area where the two machines differ substantially - the old machine runs nVidia gfx, whereas the newer one has an ATI Radeon fitted, and I've had a bit of grief already with the fglrx driver....

there was one other peculiarity - instead of running the supplied LW scripts, I tried 'java -jar LimeWire.jar' - still very slow. Then I appended -Xdebug on the end (trying to see if I could generate some debug messages - I know *nothing* about Java!!), and the program launched very quickly, but wouldn't connect.... arrrrghh....

thanks all for any help on this - when LW is up and running, it's great!

OK, as a postscript to the post above, what actually happens when I run 'java -jar Limewire.jar -Xdebug' is that LW starts up promptly, then takes a few minutes to connect..

Strange - the machine in question has a direct internet connection, whereas the other networked machine, on which LW works fine, is connected via the 'problem' machine, using IP forwarding (masquerading)..
