Do you get these errors when running LimeWire as root?

Please check whether you have permissions to write to the "~/.limewire" directory. To test if that's the case type

touch ~/.limewire/test

if you see an error message, there must be a problem with the permissions of your home folder.

no i can run lw under root but who would want to? i did a successful touch into limewire directory. this is happening now on two different machines both running mdk 9.1 w/jre 1.4.2 when running under normal user i get to part where it asks me to pick a share directory and once i do it says error : lw was unable to use specified directory for saving files choose another. and whatever i choose im stuck on this error message. when running as root it remebers my settings fine. any ideas. when i was running lw 4.0.1 i was able to run w/o root privileges

ps- i checked and the lw directory is setup as root ownership w/rwx privileges for all groups. all the files in lw directoy are also root. the setup i have now was installed using the zip archive. i have the same trouble w/the rpm on other mandrake system. i was not able to install rpm as anything other than root. the zip i just unzipped to directory. i ran no installation script. i see a subdirectory for root in lw directory. should there be one for my regular user account?

if you installed the zipfile as root, all the files will automatically have root ownership. You do not need to be root to install LimeWire from the zipfile, but it will be able to run only by the user you installed it with.

However, even though the rpm needs to be installed as root you should be able to run limewire as any user. Did you try the rpm from the main website or the one linked on this forum? Please try that one since it may create start menu entries that you can use.

You can download it here:

i installed the mdk.rpm(at least it installs w/o having 2 run it w/--nodeps) but i still get stuck on same place when i run the .desktop sc. i dont see an incomplete directory in either /usr/lib/limewire or ~/.limewire. could that be a problem..

the "Incomplete" and "Shared" directories will be created by default in the home directory of the user you are running limewire with.

If you do a clean install, and then start limewire for the first time as a regular user, does it create those directories?

ok on one computer i just changed the owner on Incomplete directory from root to the local user and gave it +rwx priviliges for everyone and oila i can now run the script ok from command prompt. but it looks like i may have hosed my other computer. i had installed lime wire but then uninstalled it. but when i saw that it left behind most of the files and directories i threw them in trash. when i tried to do a clean install everything looked ok but i do not see the Incomplete and Shared directories in my home directory. i also notice when I ran lime wire as root for 1st time it seemed to remember all my settings even though i had erased /usr/lib/Limewire, .limewire & /usr/bin/limewire. is there some other hidden file thats keeping settings from old install? can i create the Incomplete & Shared directories myself or must it be done by lw?
