Installing Java in Mandrake

After a long, sleepless night, I finally got Java Runtime to install on my Mandrake system (what can I say, I'm really green here.) However, a stupid mistake caused me to have to re-install Linux... and I can't remember how I managed to get Java up and running. I can't even get it to realize that I have a copy of the new runtime environment installed. I've tried the 1.3 and 1.4 versions. My computer still says that I have 1.1 installed, and, as such, LimeWire won't respond. I've tried installing it to / and to the default /usr/java Neither seems to work for me. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated.

First, uninstall and delete ALL java packages you might have on your system. Then try to reinstall Java 1.4 and you shouldn't have any problems. Remember, BEFORE you try to install a new version of Java, you must first make sure that opening any console and typing "java" into it will bring up a responce of "Java, command not found" or something of the sort. Only then is it safe to install a newer version.
