Default Problems with connections and searching

I installed 4.0.8 Pro on my box running Gentoo linux. I have also tried the beta as well as older versions of Limewire and run into the same problem. The client has great difficulty connecting to other hosts. It -only- seems to be able to connect to hosts running Bearshare, and is not able to maintain a connection for very long (less thana minute). No searches return results, ever.

The router which this machine is behind is not blocking Limewire traffic. I have Limewire running on several other computers on this same network, and they function just fine.

Edit: I'm on a cable modem connection with 4mbps down/256kbps up

First off, make sure you're using the sun jre - Gentoo defaults to blackdown and we've had problems with that a lot.

In the 4.1 series (to be released as 4.2 tomorrow) we have improved the initial connection logic greatly. I recommend either getting the latest beta (which is nothing other than 4.2 itself), or copying the ~/.limewire/gnutella.net from a box where limewire connects fine over yours. That file contains the entry points to the network that specific node knows about - it should let you connect no slower than the node you copied it from.

Hope this helps - let us know how it goes.

I uploaded the 4.18.5 Limewire and I only get a one bar connection. I have tried removing the program and then re-uploading and saving in a folder then downloading but still notheing. I cannot search as it tells that it is connecting and my search would limited.

I am not very savvy in the terms! But I only started having problem when I downloaded this version. I have used the previous versions without this problem.

-- Open limewire and the bar shows one green which then disappears and the "disconnected" sign comes up, I then click on disconnect and re- connect -- still nothing -- nada !

This is a Linux thread...if you're not using Linux, you need to say so (and tell us which OS you use) - so that your post can be moved
