You should have the Hardware Test disk with the software disks that come with your Mac. You have to boot from the disk to run the utility--insert the disk into your cd rom drive, and restart while pressing the C key. If you don't have the disk, try contacting Apple--you may be able to purchase it, or if you're still under warranty get a replacement copy.

You might also try running Tech Tools and defragging your hard drive.
