Default "Software Component not found"

I am having some difficulty with MPEG files I've downloaded. When I try to play them, a window appears which informs me that the file could not open because "a software component needed by the movie could not be found." Is this a matter of my missing a plug-in of some kind, or something else? I would be grateful for any insight someone might have on this. Thank you!
