Could not move to Library - ridiculous bug... OK, I posted this in another thread, but figured it might not get looked at as it should... I was hoping 2.8 would fix some things, but I guess that was too much to hope for... Until recently (2.7.9), I had been having no problems at all with LimeWire, other than the occasional "swimming through molasses" issues which seem to be the norm around here in OS X. My 10.1.5 system was running fine, 768MB of RAM, 120GB of hard drive space, dual G4/450s... Then, out of the blue, I started getting the dreaded "Could not move to Library" errors. Now I've gone through every single thread in these forums concerning this issue, and I'm aware of the bug with X/LimeWire not allowing oddball characters in the filename. This error, though, happens on files of all sizes, with no odd characters involved. I upgraded to 2.7.13, and the program crashed constantly. I don't think I had it running for more than 5 minutes at a time. Thinking it may have been a bad RAM chip, I replaced ALL of the RAM with PC100 chips from my old Win2K box. No diff. Uninstalling and reinstalling back to 2.7.9 didn't help. I've been meaning to upgrade to Jaguar for awhile (discs have just been sitting, while I tested Jag on an older G3 system for compatibility issues), so I took the plunge... I installed 10.2 (plus .2 update) onto a fresh hard drive last week, and installed 2.7.13 (Pro), and it crashed almost immediately everytime. I uninstalled it, installed 2.7.9, and that seemed to work, though it would still randomly crash. I did an upgrade to 2.7.13, and that now works, though I still have the occasional crash. No Norton on my system, either. Biggest piece of software I've installed so far has been Mozilla 1.2.1. I'm downloading files with no odd characters (worst is a hyphen!), and although I was having the worst time trying to download large files (+400MB), it's now happening with files under 30MB as of this morning... I haven't downloaded the PC version to try it, but I'm not sure I want to mung up my WinXP Pro box. I will not renew my subscription. I'll probably go back to using the PC to download using Gnucleus, unless someone can tell me what the problem is. I've really WANTED to stick with LW, but this is getting silly, I tell you, just silly! LimeWire now officially sucks. Please help. |
Ditto... This is a new bug that I have previously only experienced in low disc-space situations , but now its constant. I wonder how many people are having this problem. |
Do you ever not get the "Could Not Move to Library" bug? Also, do you know if you're running as an Ultrapeer (if it says "Ultrapeer" in the lower left-hand corner of the connections tab, then you're an Ultrapeer). If so, try disabling becoming an Ultrapeer in the Preferences window. Finally, how many files are you sharing? If you're sharing a lot of files, you may want to consider moving some of those files outside of your shared directory. Does any of that help? |
I think that momentarily I have something like 127 files shared. I'll try removing some of them and see where that gets me. I don't recall ever seeing ultrapeer, but I do recall seeing "leaf" and "client". |
1 Attachment(s) Addendum: I have uninstalled the latest edition using its uninstaller, and then reinstalled to see if that makes a difference. I thought it was interesting that even after running the uninstaller, there wsa still a folder, there were still preferences and other files... shouldn't those be removed? Also, both times I have installed the latest edition, the attached error log file has been saved to my desktop. This is a new development, which has never occurred before. |

Thanks for the replies. Are you using a FireWire drive by any chance? Many users have experienced these issues when using FireWire drives. If you are using FireWire, do you still get these problems when you disconnect it, boot up, and run LimeWire again? Oh, and you basically become an Ultrapeer depending upon whether or not the part of the network you connect to "needs" an Ultrapeer at that time -- if you connect to another Ultrapeer that already has leaves and has open slots, it will tell you to become one of its leaves. |
can't move to library I'm running 2.7.13 on my G4 with OSX 10.1.5 I've gotten this error on 2 large files 1) is there any way to recover the file? 2) is there a cause and or fix discovered? the file must be somewhere since it took the tiime to download right? Please help? |

As for the hint to disable Ultrapeer capabilities, I tried that, and LimeWire 2.7.13 still gives me the error on some files. In frustration, I reinstalled Jaguar and updates (had issues with iPhoto not working after an import), but the problem still persists. The funny part is, the files giving me the error aren't actually finishing. I actually watched a file being downloaded, and suddenly it gave the error after only 60% of the file was downloaded. Now here's the really interesting part: my ISP (Earthlink DSL) dropped my IP address at that moment, so there was actually a disconnection from the Gnutella network! Earthlink gives me a DYNAMIC IP address, which rarely changes, EXCEPT when I run LimeWire. It seems like they are switching my address on purpose whenever they detect Gnutella presence from my computers. Currently, I have a Linux box acting as a frontend (IPTables firewall, Snort intrusion detection, file/print share, Samba server, web server, MP3 server) running a modified Redhat 7.3 system from ClarkConnect.org (highly recommended, and free!). It has builtin PPPoE heartbeat check, and will automatically try to grab a new IP address if the old one "expires." I'm wondering if this error happens when a connection is lost. As I can't tell from any logs I see when LimeWire gives this error, I can't really track it aside from sitting at the Mac for 24/7 with LimeWire active. I do have a log of the times my server has to reconnect to Earthlink. If there was a log for LimeWire, I could easily track down this possible problem... Thanks for any ideas you've been coming up with! Dan |
I am also getting these "Cannot move to library errors" and again very intermittently. It can happen with the same files (redownloading) but size and type do't seem to make a difference. As to other details: MacOS X.2.3, 2 gigs free space, sharing 5 files (had a clearout!) I, too, would like to know how to rescue the "unmovables"! |
Possible way round the "could not move to library" bug. I too have been getting the dreaded "could not move to library" bug! But, if I kill the download and then download it again it carries on from where it went wrong, occasionally I have to repeat the process but it seems to finish it eventually. |
Just a suggestion... when people get this error, how many downloads do you have going? I've had this happen from time to time, and noticed that it usually happened when I had a big queue built through multiple sessions. Haven't counted how many, but will next time. |
I get this in about one of five downloads too. Its not the worst bug i have ever seen, but it is a pisser when you try to download and come home to see you got zero. I have tryed to come up with a solution and the best i can do is figure it must be dependent on the system of file orgin. |
The_Jaysta has a workaround if you care to read his comments. Works for me anyway. Tom |
It's not 100% but it gets them 9/10 times. |
There is a workaround for this. You can go to the incomplete folder, and sometimes the file is there, if you are still connected to the server(s). Once you go into the incomplete folder, you can drag the file wherever you want it, and change the name, taking the T-xxxxx number off of it - and the file is usually pretty cool - this is driving me crazy - but I thought I'd offer the help. I hope those guys at Limewire will pay attention to us. Also - how will I know when my six months of Pro are up? |
How to recover the file? The file which "could not be moved to library" must be in my computer somewhere. Where can i find it? I've tried all the methods and I just could not get the file again. |
reply to finding failed files i have had this problem and it seems to appear when a download is complete, the files are located in the incomplete folder on your hard drive. i unstuffed one which had this error and it came up with a curruption message but it all appeared to be fine... the jaystar idea sound good will try that one |
Number of open files? I've suspected that it has to do with the # of files the JAVA session has to the hard drive. It seems that it really started getting bad when multiple sources was introduced, but when I allow a bunch of simultaneous downloads it starts dropping files. It seems like it's more of a problem downloading big files, so I've thought that maybe every connection to that 700MB file reserves 700MB somehow, and then it has problems with disk space, but I haven't really figured out how to verify this theory. Colin |
Anyone fix this problem?? I have tried allthe fixes any other ideas? Eric |
I just downloaded the latest version of Limewire 2.8.5 and get the same error. I am only trying to download 1 file that is 38,642 KB in size. I have never seen this error before on previous versions of Limewire. I am using WinXP. |
i am ultrapeer and share >1,000 mp3s, about 500 mpgs i get this message in bundles, not all the time. the downloads i do get are fast 30Gigs free X1.5 G4 733 640 Mb |
Try drumbeat for Mac ... I know they want twenty bucks but ... Try the trial. It's pretty good. No adware or spyware. You can actually find serials for it pretty easily during the trial but whoever created this software is monitoring it very closely -- every stolen serial number I've used, I got busted. (Plus they send you these really personal e-mail messages like register and we'll treat you like family ... so I felt guilty and did and you knowwhat? they're pretty nice. That aladdin program spring cleaning ate my download and my word files (be very careful -- I don't think I'll use it again) and when I emailed them they got back to me in maybe an hour with my reg. code.) Isn't there a file-sharing search engine on ICQ that would let Mac people share with anybody without an install? I'm an ICQ rookie so I don't know but it would seem like the easiest thing in the world to start a Mac group. Anyway, maybe we should just Ftp each other -- it would be easier. By the way, does anybody here ever have any luck playing movies on mac? (particularly when you've burned them as ISOs)? I talked to a Mac technician about it and even he said most files you download don't work with the filters and file-changers they're supposed to. |
"Could not move to library" Guys, guys, guys !!!! If you continue to ignore the "Could not move to library" problem, it is going to kill this product !!!!!!!!! I have spent considerable time experimenting with different solutions and nothing *fixes* it. I have tried every version from 2.6.3 to 2.8.6 and they all do it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it numerous times. I have lost at least 50 downloads. There are numerous complaints in this forum and I have only seen a few explanations. None of these explanations hold water. Explanation # 1. The file has special characters. Response: I did not see any special characters in any of the 50+ downloads that failed. Are the special characters hidden? Work-around #1. Kill the download before it finishes and restart it. Response: If the problem is special characters, then why does killing the download and restarting it work??? It should fail either way, right? Don't take my word for it. Search through this forum and read all of the different comments where people HAVE had success with this work-around. Explanation # 2. The file was corrupted. Response: Limewire only reported corruption in 1 of the 50+ files. Explanation # 3. Hard drive is full. Response: I have over 50 megs. available on my hard drive. Explanation # 4. The problem is caused by a Firewire drive. Response: I do not have a Firewire drive. Explanation # 5. Insufficient system memory. Response: I upgraded from 128 megs to 256 megs of ram and still get this error. Work around #2. Go to the Incomplete folder and move the file manually. Response: I have not been able to find any of the 50+ downloads that failed with this error. It appears that Limewire deletes the file from the Incomplete folder BEFORE it determines that it can't save it to the Shared folder. Don't take my word for it. Search through this forum and read all of the different comments where people have NOT had success with this work-around. At this point, I have completely given up on Limewire. I have not had a successful download in 2 weeks!!! I really like the product and I am not trying to slam it. I just want some one to take the problem seriously and fix it. Thanks! Lee |
I use Limewire for quite a time know under OS 9 and never had (major) problems. Today I downloaded it for OS X, set it up and entered a search string. The results came as usua,l but when trieing to download any file I got the message "Could not move to library" I tried changing the shared folders to different volumes, different foldernames, with and without shared files, but no luck. Then I tried to open my old limewire in classic modus, but guess what? SAME ERROR! Troubles with permissions under OS X perhaps? So reboot in OS 9.2. again: SAME ERROR!! Conclusion: I don't know what's wrong |
