New Version is Worthless

This new version for OSX is worthless. Before I could download about 5% of everything I tried. Now it won't download anything ("unable to download"). Are there any other Mac alternatives? Thanks.

Acquisition is the most elegant program for p2p on OSX (some mention Drumbeat or Myster, but I didn't find them better). I haven't tried Phex or Mutella, and there are probably others.

I rather like the progress I'm seeing in the new LW versions, but I've learned to think 5 % is not bad. I've been able to download files I only saw in occasional searches before. There is still lots to be done (I think I've sent in 3 or 4 crashlogs already), but LW is a project under construction, and is only just starting to implement changes that really affect OSX. Anyway, Acquisition depends on the same core code as Limewire.

You know that the "could not download" just means "search again", right? I force my IP, share more than 100 files, and am ready to disable Ultrapeer if my computer starts acting overloaded.

Cheers--post back which client works best for your set-up.

You should try Xnap. You won't find as many files as on Gnutella but you'll find lots o' movies and stuff. It's real fast too.

No, it's not, but you can try it anyway.

Try Direct Connect" at www.neo-modus.com

stief April 6th, 2003 08:35 PM

Hi Jack--how well does it work?

Jack April 6th, 2003 09:20 PM

Hi Stief,
How u Doing? I use "Direct Connect" for all of my music. I must say that it is better than "Limewire" for downloading music. You can get full albums without having to know all of the songs on a particular album. Still I would not part with "Limewire" as it is the best for downloading programs. Give it a try & see how it works for you.
All the best, Jack.

Hmmm. I don't listen to much music (no pun), but the album idea sounds sensible. Does uploading work differently?

rasd1 April 7th, 2003 06:57 AM

I have dloaded the latest LimeWire (should be renamed loserwire) and I get bupkus. The early limewire 's worked great but I am talking a year ago now.
I use Acquisition and it rocks.I paid for Limewire but Acquisition in its free mode works better than limewire does in its paid mode...Thats just my experience.-rasd1:p

Hi Stief,

I've never seen anybody uploading from me. I've followed all the instructions but nothing seen. I've tried to get advice in the main chat's about slots and how you locate and open them. But nobody seems to be able to understand what i'm trying to say.

Do you know anything about slots?

Al the best. Jack.

stief April 9th, 2003 04:29 PM

slots--never stopped for long in Las Vegas ;)

don't know anything about donkey slots (sounds like a search term)-- but the slots could be the # of download spots each user sets for uploads (see prefs). You can't do much about that other than get on a network that has lots of users with lots of the files you want. If only a few of a lot are open--get lots. You can try fiddling by building up the best set of connections you can by deleting ones that return few results, even after several repeat searches.

Did you open the firewall and router for 6346, and force IP? Maybe slots = ports.
displaced over on the Acq boards is developing a little applescript that checks to see if you have an open channel to gnutella.

Cheers

Jack April 9th, 2003 06:53 PM

Hi Stief,
Yeh slots are the spots for uploads/downloads.
I have no trouble in getting any files that I require but would like to share what I have. (maybe nobody likes what I've got) Ha Ha.

I will look into the Firewall and Router 6346 thingy and see if that helps and I'll take a look at the Acq boards and see what Displaced is up too.

Thanx for all the info.
All the Best. Jack.
:D

ref - slots,firewall,router

Hi Stief,
I went back into the settings for Direct Connect & changed from Passive to Active mode. They tell you if you are behind a Firewall to use Passive which I had done. Anyway went to Active mode and typed in my I.P. address, changed the Download Port and Search Port from default to 6346. Now people can share my files:cool: Hope it keeps up.

See Ya.
