ultrapeer vs leaf

i'm running lw 2.9.8 on osx 10.1.5 with cable connection. by default lw configured me as ultrapeer. how are these modes different?

as an ultrapeer you are passing on messages for other people, as a leaf you only receive messages concerning you. So ultrapeers are nodes devoting a part of their bandwidth to keep the network alive.
