the interesting new feature is gnutella trafic compression, other than that I think there is an updated dynamic querying. There are new preferences for traffic compression and user interface. No problems for now, seems to get more results, but it may be only that the network is improving.

Is the traffic compression supposed to help keep connections and the network more stable?

And is there documentation available?

Thanks!

compression reduces the amount of data exchanged between ultrapeers-ultrapeers and leaf-ultrapper connections. It means that an ultrapeer with a fixed bandwidth can relay more data or use less bandwidth. It "should" improve ultrapeers stability under large traffic load. Notice however that it should use a little more cpu to compress and decompress data. If you want to see the specs go in the files section of the GDF.

Default Surprising

Hi et voila

I'm glad you said that it was hoped that 2.9.8 would improve ultrapeer stability because the actual result has failed in this noble ambition.

So, my advice to Clueless is to disable the ultrapeer option (which is, for all the right long-term reasons, the default setting). You will find that there is improvement in the search results but life is definitely better as a leaf for the time being.

And, just in case you haven't picked it up in the other threads, there is now no automatic requery so you have to actively kill/redownload, and re-search to optimise downloading outcomes.

I think manual requerying should help, if you think of all the doomed requests that are continually sending packets around the globe, using up more of the pipe.

Not sure what the GDF is, but I will keep an eye out for it.

re compression: my first thought was similar to what Windows uses by way of a settings choice, or at least used to, in the days of the modem. Error correction and compression, which was supposed to help keep troublesome ISP connections from dropping, although at a bit of a speed sacrifice. (I would happily give up some KB/secs for better results and completions.)

Default the gdf

the GDF means the gnutella developpers forum
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/the_gdf/
It is only for developpers, but everyone has access to the files' section.
