Red Dot on OSX...

Hi there,

I'm a new user, both on the MacOS (well, since the beginning of 2002, in fact) and the Limewire P2P platforms... I'm currently facing a problem i can't solve by myself (i'm faaar from a techie)... You probably could help me, maybe...

So, when i try to connect Limewire to the net, the dot / connection button stay green for less than a second, then turns red again and forever... Nothing happens on the connection window...

I checked my internet connection, no hardware problem with the modem, no firewall, automatic connection asked in the prefs... So, i thought it could be an OS incompatibility, but i'm still in the mist... I've heard that a connection could take time, but no information in the connection window after more than 10 minutes, soooo ?!???

FYI, here's my config :
- iMac G4/700
- internal Apple Modem 56K
- MacOS X 10.1.2. (it rocks... with memory)

Worse, i did not find tips to solve my problem in the FAQs nor the user guide's PDFs... I'm probably not the only user to meet this problem. Advice welcome, thanks.

By the way, nice site, nice community...
Best wishes from the sunny french Provence.

Sounds like you're not getting a stable connection. Go to file and click connect. That ought to initiate searching for more UPs and you should get more connections. Your problem sounds pretty general, so it could be something else.

Interesting

Let's start with a simple possibility. "No firewall" on your machine is an interesting assertion. All MACs come with a firewall in the software bundle. Open System Preferences and check what setting you have in Sharing under the tab "Firewall". For Limewire and the other p2p packages to work properly, you have to open port 6346 in the firewall. If I have misremembered the format of System Preferences under OS10.1.2, I apologise. To gather evidence on whether the firewall on your OS is the problem, try switching it off for a while. If this does not work, report back and we'll offer further advice.

Hi Marlene

Would you confirm that you are a private user and not using a machine at work or in an educational institution on a LAN.

And, if a private user:

(1) are you directly connected to the internet and not using a router? and

(2) have you installed any other "security/anti-virus" package on your machine?

With the answers to these questions, whoever next reads your answers can probably give you sensible advice.:)

I'm having the same problem. I just installed the update for limewire, yes im connected to the net on the right port... I also updated my mac osx which included a security update (along with safari, and quicktime)
My problems the same, click on connect and it flashes green then stays red. Right before i upgraded i was an ultrapeer, and none of my settings have been changed (i checked).
Any ideas?

it works!!!!

After having read the Questions of David91, I tried it once again, and suddenly it worked!!!!
But now I have a (hopefully) last Question: Can I transmit my downloaded mp3 files to iTunes? If yes, how??

Just find where the files are on your harddrive and drag them onto your itunes Library.

Bringing songs into iTunes

>Just find where the files are on your harddrive and drag them onto your itunes Library.<

just drag them onto your itunes icon.. even in the dock. Works like a charm.
