How to run Limewire on Java 1.4.1 OSX
 

Hi guys,

those of you complayning that Limewire is eating up all your resources:

You might want to try to run Limewire with Apples Java 1.4.1.
This is Completely ported to the Cocoa framework,that is easier on resources. Also the Memory footprint of java had been reduces significantly, and things like mouse scrollwheel also work now ;)

to use 1.4.1 you best open your terminal
type:
#cd /Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents
#vi Info.plist

press
/Java

you should now see some text like

<key>Java</key>
<dict>
<key>ClassPath</key>

Modify it like this:

<key>Java</key>
<dict>
<key>JVMVersion</key>
<string>1.4*</string>
<key>ClassPath</key>

In case you don't know how to use Vi - you can use another editor of choice, but here are some commands:
to insert text, press 'i'
when done inserting press <esc>
to delete a letter press 'x'

to save and exit, press ':wq'

to see all commands, open another terminal and type 'man vi'

PS - in case you don't know what terminal is - never mind my suggestions, read someting else instead ;)

I tried your suggestion (thanks!) with the latest 3.2.3, and after about 2 minutes it just froze while doing a search and then "unexpectedly quit". It generated a crash log with over 200 threads.
Don't know if it's this version or because of using java 1.4.1

BTW. You can make the suggested changes using a gui editor by control clicking on the Limewire app, showing contents, and drilling down util you find the Info.plist file. Then you can open the file in your favorite editor.

Hm, sorry about that. I'm using 3.2.2 right now, and it is much better using the newer Java version.
It crashes occasionally. I think always when an apple script program is executed, but i'll track that a bit further.
With the old Java Version it crashed much more frequently here...

You do of course need the new java version installed (Jaguar.2.6 running here)

The positive thing about it is really - Limewire hardly uses any CPU resources on my little ibook.
Also Cocoa handles disconnectet monitors a good deal better, resizing and moving the window to the remaining Monitor if a 2nd display is removed. It is VERY unnerving to find your windows somwhere out of reach when you're on the move... (I do hate Carbon ;))
