I don't have any more answers than Sam, trap_jaw, Jens-Uwe and others like et voilą have given me. It's a pretty good community of users and coders and developers all helping each other.

Anyway, 50+ means you were running as an UP; 4 is more than enough for a leaf. DSL, thanks to the improvements in LW, is enough to run as an UP. Sam will be able to tell you much more. Easiest is just to let the code decide

As for the Java installer--my old link didn't work, but LOL, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120242 says

I think this thread will help others now that Sam has given a fix. Perhaps Apple will pay more attention to Java developers like LW when they point out problems!
