hangs while loading shared folder

So, a couple of weeks ago system update comes up and tells me its time for an update to os 10.2.8. So I update as usual and everything seems fine until I try to run LimeWire.

I figure it's a system update thing so I upgrade my earlier version of LW Pro to version 3.6.15 and still no luck.

It just sits there "loading shared files" and the only way to get out of it is to force quit.

I have tried the following fixes to no effect: deleting preferences, deleting everything; restarting; redownloading and reinstalling, downgrading Quicktime to 6.3, updating Java and removing all of my shared files.

I'm stumped. Any ideas out there?

thanks,
Chris

Nice clear post! How big is your shared folder? That can take a while to rehash, seeming like a freeze. Watch the dot at the bottom of the Search Pane to see the progress of the "Sharing *** of *** files.
Just let it work.

Also, to cut down on the first-time hashing progress, I don't connect to the network until the hash is complete, and clean out the incomplete folder to stop files that try to reconnect.

I had troubles with the QT and 10.2.8 updates, but all is good now.

btw-- a Safe Boot and Repairing Permissions before and after upgrades catches many problems

still hung

Thanks for the reply.

My shared files folder is pretty big (almost 2 gig). I tried removing all of the files and the same thing happens.

I ran the disc utility off of the 10.2 installer disc 1 and repaired permissions, but as I write this the LW splash screen just sitting there "loading shared files." It's been there about 15 minutes now. I've let it sit there for as long as 30 minutes in the last couple weeks with no change.

How do I perform a safe boot?

thanks again,
Chris

Yes--2 gigs will take quite a while, depending on your CPU. Once done though, the results are stored in the fileurns.cache in the preferences, and only newly added files need to be hashed.
I wonder, now, if your fileurns.cache is corrupted. If you search for it and throw it away, it will be rebuilt. You can watch the time it takes by looking at the files in the Library. Red files are unhashed, black ones are completed. Don't hit the Refresh button, or it will start all over.

Repair permissions using Disk Utility on the hard drive while running your updated system (off the CD will reset all permissions to the original settings--not a good idea).

For safe boot, just restart and hold down the shift key right after the startup chime . . . see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...boot#post79186

This is the same as booting into single user mode (command-s on startup) and typing fsck -y when prompted, without having to worry about typing any damaging terminal commands. The only advantage here is that fsck -y will show you if changes were made.

Hi back agian,

So, it seems that since I've deleted my entire preferences folder (more than once) perhaps LW has never gotten far enough to create a new fileurns.cache file? Nothing comes up in a search or when I looked in the LW preferences folder.

In the past I have watched it rehashing my files and it did take a little while, but at this point I can't even get that far.

Like many other programs, just after the icon in the dock stops bouncing the LW splash screen comes up and flashes some messages in the lower right corner and it hangs at loading shared files.
hmmmm . . .

And the safe boot hasn't seemed to have helped either.

???

OS 10.3 fixed it

Just following up for anyone interested. I updated to OS 10.3 (panther) and the problem went away.

Cheers,
Chris
