dmg. files won't open
 

I'm new to the panther and can't get downloaded dmg. files to open.
I get "no mountable file systems" as a prompt and would appreciate some insight.

I vaguely recall something like this, and I think the solution was to drag the file onto Disk Utility.

If not, maybe http://www.c-command.com/dropdmg/ can mount the file.

Thanks for your insights. Based on a review of past threads, I notice I'm not the first to run up against this problem. Perhaps it'd be helpful to everyone if we followed this thru to resolution, because I never would have posted in the first place if there'd have been a more thoroughly understandable remedy then what's appeared before.
Frankly, I've got no problem appearing as computer illiterate and, in hopes of quelling future questions that deal with exactly the same issue, let's talk.
I tried what you suggested and placed a 22.1 mb dmg. file in my disc utility program. I followed, I believe, the instructions and put the damn thing on my hard drive. It transferred OK and, as a result, had become a file that (according to "get info") had ballooned to 2.2 gigs in size. It did show an install image and a pdf read me file, but I couldn't get either of these to open. Is there something that can be explained in an elementary manner that would give a newbie some idea of what any of this means? I know it's asking for a tone down in cybernese terminology, but there's little doubt others will be accessing this thread who are concerned about looking stupid and just won't ask, thus losing out on the options available.

I'm all for it--simple explanations are best. 22MB files shouldn't end up as 2.2 Gigs! If you think I can help, use the email or PM button to send me the file details and we can keep the jargon out of the way until you can post a clear solution for others.

Have you come up with anything? I have a dmg which is mounting on the desktop but not able to install from there.
I don't know what to do next!

Im also having trouble opening certain .dmg files with Limewire 3.8.10 in osx 10.3.3. The suggested workarounds didnt work for me.
Its a bug, and we will have to wait until its fixed.
Ive reported it to Limewire.

solved it
 

1- there are files that are incomplete or corrupted, yet LW will download them, and you WONT see any error message! LW thinks they are ok, but they are not. Its not a bug in LW, its a bug in the file you have.
2- www.bitzi.com is a place where users like us keep notes on which files are corrupt, and how to tag and avoid them. Take the time to read up on bitzi because youre going to need it from now on if you use p2p.
3- mac osx is a great forum, but there are also lots of answers to your problem in 'gnutella> download and upload probs' forum. Do a search on your prob in ALL forums.

Not in my case, as LW often tells me that the file I'm trying to download is corrupt, and asks if I want to continue downloading.

There must be something in the air in Australia, as I have just solved my issue with the dmg files which wouldn't install!

It turned out that there were two copies of an application called "installer". One of these, the one which was the default, of course, was corrupted. I have deleted that version of "installer" and now all dmg files open and install correctly!
