Firewall Settings And Sharing

I'm sorry to post a repetitive note. Once again, I'm trying to get the set-up right for sharing files behind firewalls. From reading other posts I have figured out most of it. I am using Mac OSX 10.2, LimeWire 4, a D-Link router, and cable internet. Under Sharing in the OSX Firewall Sharing I set "New" and then chose the Gnutella/Limewire (6346) check box. I'm assuming Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing do not need to be enabled. I am also unsure how to configure the settings on the router. It has a page for setting up a "Virtual Server". Would these be the correct settings? In the field "Private IP" I would put my IP address. In the "Protocol Type" field I would put TCP/UDP. In the "Private Port" field I would put 6346. In the "Public Port" field I would put 6346. Does this sound correct? The Firewall Rules would be enabled to allow traffic from, "WAN IP Range" (my port #) to "LAN IP Range" (my port #) and the "Protocol" set to TCP. Would the "WAN & LAN IP Range Start" be the port number of the router, and the "IP Range End" be the number of my computer, like x.x.x.101? Does this sound correct?

Yes.
I also set my OSX Network Preferences to a "Manually" and give it a fixed IP (192.168.*.2) so that the router--LinkSys here--doesn't change my private IP.

On the LinkSys, The settings for allowing incoming to the private IP:PORT 6346 TCP/UDP are under Advanced->Port Forwarding.

Then in the LW Preferences->Advanced->Port and Firewall settings also use the same port (6346).

You'll know it works when you can scroll through the LW Prefs->Bug Reports->View Example and see the line "Accept incominng this session=True"

Thanks - I'll mess around with settings and see what happens. I don't want to freeload. I had this stuff figured out in System 9 last Winter, but OSX and the router are newer gadgets for me.

LOL--I hear ya! et voilą, trap_jaw and jum worked me through the same problems last year. OSX sure is powerful when you need the info though, and I even erased my OS 9 partition: just don't use it any more.

I haven't been able to see the line ( = true ) yet in the bug report. I'm working on it now - trying the firewall settings. I know some stuff is working because I can see th IP address.
