Default connect to a LAN?

Hi,
I have just made the shift from PC to Mac. I am in an institute where we use the LAN to share files. I guess iam the only mac user here, all the people use shareaza on windows (v1.8 and below) to share files on the LAN. I am unable to connect using limewire. Please advice on changes to be done in order to access the same. In fact i am unable to connect at all. My firewall is disabled. am on Panther
thanks
vijay

I'm not one of the experts here, but if you're at a university, even though your computer's firewall might be disabled, the overall network will most likely have a strong firewalling. This is obviously for protection. I doubt whether you will be able to use Limewire in that setup. Perhaps I might be proved wrong. Others on this forum may know better.

Salut, Limewire uses rendez-vous technology of apple (used in itunes) to find content shared by other Limewire from the lan. So it works, make your companions use LW, it's better than shareaza for lan sharing anyway. LW 4.1.1(beta) also introduces connecting directly to other users in the search window when you know is IP.

Ciao

LimeWire uses an own UDP protocol to find content on the LAN. I'm currently not sure if it's really an independent protocol or just Gnutella messages wrapped into UDP packets. Well, anyway it's not Rendezvous which is only suitable for Host look up and such...

oups...
Hé Roger, do you know why LW doesn't try to search the LAN while we are disconnected? This would be a great functionality especially for small enterprises or family sharing.

Danke

Hmm, there's no technical reason for this. It's only there to inform "noobs" that they're not connected and cannot search therefore (point of view: no LAN, directly connected to the Internet). For ppl. with a LAN and/or who cannot connect to the Gnet it would be indeed a very nice feature.

hey,
Thanks a lot for all the replies. But my question remains Does limewire or any other p2p client (MAc) support the LAN feature. I need it desperately.
thanks
