LW 4.0.8 freezes Panther 10.3.5

Launching LW 4.0.8 freezes my Mac completely. Can't force-quit anything, not even the Finder. Have to reboot by pushing the restart button. Happened 3 times so far.

Am not running any other apps, other than Internet Connect.

Ran "Repair Disk Permissions" with same results.

Any ideas, anyone?

I presume you have the most recent version of Java. To check, open up Software Update & tell it to Check Now. How many times have you used LW 4.0.8 & how successful was it then? Is this your 1st version of LW & did you install over top? Do you have 3rd party utilities such as norton/diskwarrior, etc.

Wow, fast response! Thank you, Lord (tee hee).

According to Software Update, I do indeed have the latest version of Java.

I've only used (tried) LW 4.0.8 those three times. I've been using an old version of LW InstallAnywhere 5.0 (??) since 2002, running on Jaguar, so I thought it was time I upgraded. I kept the old one as-is, just in case.

I don't have any 3rd party utitilities such as Norton or Diskwarrior.

Think I should try LW 4.0.5?

If you have, then yeah it would be a good idea to see if it makes any diff. For some people, a various version won't/will make a difference. And since I've been on the forum I know it definitely can make a diff. Personally I use 4.0.4, though I'm going to try out the 4.1.4 beta bfore v.4.2 comes out. Strangely I just suggested the same thing to someone else not long ago but they ignored my advice. It can make a difference without a doubt.

Interesting...

Well, I just went to the LW download site, but they don't appear to offer older versions!

Now what?

Lord of the Rings August 14th, 2004 04:01 PM

Sorry I thought you meant you already had a copy of LW 4.0.5. There was/is a dwnld page for v.3 versions, but for v.4 I don't know if onw exists. There should be. B/cause some versions simply don't mix well with some people's systems despite an earlier version may have been working great previously. If U have Pro write to LW support.

Well, I decided to risk everything and try the beta version. Yippee! All is well! Life is good.

Thank you, LOTR.

Fantastic! I hope everything remains stable. I'd suggested the possibility to some others tonight but their patience had waned. Happy for you. In fact I'm shortly about to try the beta. Happy dwnlding!!
