Default 4.2.6 causes system freeze?

At a friend's urging I finally upgraded to Pro for OSX a few days ago and in general I'm happy with the increase in performance. (I'm not sure why my friend reports that he's almost always connected to seven Ultrapeers when it seems I never get more than five, though.)

However, frequently now when I'm running LimeWire, the screen will freeze up and the only thing that responds is mouse movement, but the system will not respond to ANY clicks or keys. This first happened when I tried to view the "monitor" tab, but now it seems to happen no matter what I do.

I'm on an 800MHz IBook with 256 MB of memory.

256 MB is not a lot of ram for running LW in OSX. Both Java & LW have a bit of an issue with ram & virtual memory (memory stored on the HDD.)

May I recommend you try to reduce the amount of ram LW uses by doing these things:
1. Close any LW windows you don't need open such as the monitor & even the Library window. (I only keep the search-dwnld window open unless I want to check one of the others, & then close it when I'm finished with it.)
2. When a search has obviously become redundant b/c it's many hrs old (yes they become a bit stale after a while), close that search result.
3. Go to LW's Prefs>Downloads & select Auto-clear completed Dwnlds & tick this option, & then pres the Apply button.
4. Don't run too many other apps at the same time as LW!!!
5. Make sure you still have plenty of space on your HDD.

You can monitor how much RAM & how much virtual memory (VM) LW is using & how much HDD space you still have left by opening up the Activity Monitor found in your Utilities folder.

Other things you should do are (A) Restart your computer doing a SAFE start (hold down the SHIFT key when you restart) & then open the Disk Utility program found in your Utilities folder & Repair your OSX. This should be done both before & after you install any softw. See Permissions
(B) Install Java using the Standalone Java installer (click on link)

With any luck things will improve from here!

on my system LW freezes after a while of activity.
i just found out (by using activity monitor) that LW eats up more and more ram until it crashes.

when i start LW i usually have something around 350mb memory left. then i can watch it dissapearing like a countdown.

suggestions anyone?

merry christmas, btw.

mike_bols you should repair permissions using DiskUtility both before & after installing any softw.

As for ram use, yes, that appears to be a java issue for osx. May I suggest you do certain things to reduce the ram use. Close any windows you don't need open at that time (eg: connections & monitor windows.) LW Prefs>Downlds>Auto-clear completed Dwnlds & tick this option & press the Apply button. Remove old seach results (ie:several hours old.) Hide LW in the Dock when not searching etc. All these things help to reduce/stabilise LW's use of ram.
