Limewire Pro's causing Safari to run slowly

Whenever I run Limewire, I notice that loading pages on Safari is very slow.
Is there anything I can do about this except for close out of Limewire?

Hi

Here are a couple of solutions.

If you have a lot of uploads (watch the monitor pane for activiity, or the Tools->bandwidth-upstream graph), just reduce the slider in the Preferences->uploads to ~85% of your tested speed.

To find out your tested upload speed (when LW is not running), do the speed test at http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest

If LW has been running for a long time, the virtual memory can get high. Open Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder and see if LW's Virtual Memory is about 600-700 MB (usual). If it is larger than about 1 GB, just shut your machine down for a couple of minutes at some convenient time and restart again. That will clear the old memory and get a fresh start.

cheers

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Still a problem

I don't get this... even when I set upload and downloads to 0%, the browser is still slow.

Even when I "disconnect", I don't see any change in the upload bit rate.

I'd like to keep LimeWire running full time, but I have to kill it everytime I want to use the Internet for something else... it's a shame to have to cut everyone off who's currently uploading something from me.

Does anyone else see these effects?

cheers,

sorry pidtau, I only see what you are describing when I get to low disk space conditions (it's a bug in Apple's version of java for Panther, but not in Tiger).

Otherwise, like this weekend, I can be uploading at 85% of my available upload speed, downloading lots, and Safari and email are not affected.

That's with OS 10.3.9 and LW Pro 4.9.29. I hear that with OS 10.4, LW isn't affected.

What version of OS X and LW are you using?

I can confirm exactly what Stief said and add that I am giving Phex 2.6.0.87 a little outing, and it seems to me to be slowing things down more than LW

Maybe try downloading fewer files at once to reduce memory usage. I had this same problem when trying to download 5 files concurrently. I cancelled 4 of them and downloaded them one at a time and it fixed the problem.

Machine specs:
PB G4 867mhz
640mb ram
6gb free hard disk
