Limewire Problems

Okay, I am using a Mac (crappy Macs). My Limewire cannot find any sources for my music. Whats going on?

stief May 6th, 2005 01:52 PM

your music isn't available or your connection doesn't allow gnutella searches.

Chenchi May 10th, 2005 11:36 AM

No. We have used Limewire on these Macs before. The music played fine and all that, but recently nothing is working. So.....Yeah.

Chenchi May 10th, 2005 11:57 AM

Help me plz

I have posted in a few forums and done all the steps. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled and done the java update and all that. My LW cannot connect or find sources. Can anyone help plz? This is a school network.

These threads have been combined!

That's probably why!!! Many schools try to block p2p b/c it uses up too much bandwidth which they pay a lot of money for.

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

Please supply more details about your set up as required by the forum rules: Forum Rules (click here)

As far as your music goes ... use iTunes instead!!! ;) LW will struggle to play consistently if LW is too busy. Playlists are only reference files ... the LW playlist in iTunes is simply a playlist & if you move any of those files then the playlist won't work! Import the songs automatically to iTunes & forget about the LW playlist & you'll be fine. Other than that, have a look the at the Stickies in this section & look at the iTunes threads & links.

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 08:25 AM

Okay....

Okay, I have done the little test and it said it worked. The school network is somewhere around T1 and about 7 in my classroom and a bunch of others in the classrooms in the school.

I am not using LW to play the music, it just won't let me download music.

Lord of the Rings May 11th, 2005 09:00 AM

So what happens exactly? Do you get search results? If you select any of them to downld what happens?

Why not try a really popular one with lots & lots of sources ... just to see what happens. Try the beatles or let it be.

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 10:30 AM

Okay....I just logged back into my account and got on LW and the thing says turbocharged connection. I dont know why. But here is what it does. I type in the song or artist I want, and it gets results but when I click on one, it says either it needs more sources or just connects forever. I am trying Beatles-Let it Be right now, I will post what happens soon.

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 10:31 AM

Actually, I will post what happens right now. It also says it needs more sources.

Lord of the Rings May 11th, 2005 11:04 AM

Go to LW's Preferences>Bug Report & press View Example button. Scroll about 1/3 to half way down the result & look for 'Received incoming this session' Does it say True/False?

Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False?

You know you can stop the downld & re-select it to downld to see if it helps. Or try Resume on it.

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 11:08 AM

Okay, it has false next to it. And I have stopped the dl and restarted with a dif dl.....and it did nothing.

Lord of the Rings May 11th, 2005 11:26 AM

Blocked incoming generally means a firewall. It could be due to a softw firewall or a hardware device such as modem/router, etc. The way the network & connection is set up probably.

I'm not sure from here. Might have to pass you to Stief to deal with. He might have some ideas.

Just one last thought, temporarily change your port for listening to port 80. LW Prefs>Advanced>Firewalls. (Don't forget to press Apply.) And repeat the above experiment.

My only other thought is to use a proxy.

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 11:28 AM

Do you mean port 6380?

Lord of the Rings May 11th, 2005 11:31 AM

Gee that was quick lol :D No port 80. It's a port generally used for http purposes such as browsing. But then you could experiment with a no. of port no.'s such as a high no. like 20282

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 11:37 AM

I will try that.....but nothing seems to be working.

Chenchi May 11th, 2005 11:52 AM

Nothing is really working. I need help....This is why I hate Macs so much. I have barely any idea on how to work with them.

Lord of the Rings May 11th, 2005 12:00 PM

Some mac users feel the same about pc's. lol :D It's what you're used to I guess. This issue is not due to the mac anyway AFAIK. Unless you have the mac firewall active. See http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

As I said I'm out of ideas. I've sent a pm to Stief but it could be a day or so before he responds. If you're willing to try a proxy then see A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 & 2 which has a link to alternative instructions. This is why I hate these posts so much. They blame the wrong things, provide wrong information, and haven't read the rules about what information is helpful. I have no idea even what LW version is being used here. Sheesh.

Oh well, help has been asked, but I can only reinforce what you've already suggested LOTR.

No incoming connections are because there is a block in the network, probably because many schools block upstream somewhere.

So, who controls that? Ask your school's network admin why you can't download. It's a networking problem. Actually, I'm surprised LW even managed to connect to others to allow search results to get back to the machines. Does the admin tells you there are no restrictions on downloads?

For a reliable test, get the admin to try any of the free and legitimate files from http://magnetmix.com/video.shtml

If the video of "The Scene" won't download, try the "more info" link and find the web download link as a comparison.

Let us know what you find (version and other info, admin's answer, magnetmix comparison results).

Chenchi May 12th, 2005 08:52 AM

Okay....The version is LW 4.8.1 and I have the Java 1.4.2_03. I have talked to Admin and she said that she has no idea what is wrong with the dl's or any of that. Not a very good admin if you ask me. I could not dl the Scene video, it needed more sources. I dont know what else to do.

Chenchi May 12th, 2005 08:56 AM

Oh, and one of my friends has opened a hole for LW in the Mac preferences sharing file, and that didn't work.

Chenchi May 13th, 2005 08:37 AM

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Chenchi May 13th, 2005 10:50 AM

Okay, I could seriously use some help plz.....

stief May 13th, 2005 02:31 PM

Chenchi, find the network admin (not just an admin). Our school has a local admin, but the local admin doesn't control the routers or the port allocations. You want to find the person who has access to the computer that controls the final access to the internet.

We can't do any more here: we don't have access to the routers that control what packets are allowed onto your school network.

It's like me asking you to set up my Internet Service Providers machine ;)

Anyway, best wishes

Chenchi May 16th, 2005 10:42 AM

Okay....Can one of you just tell me how to take all of LW off my computer, meaning off the registry and everything. That is all I will need help with. Maybe that will work.

Chenchi May 16th, 2005 12:42 PM

Wow....It must take people a long time to answer......

stief May 16th, 2005 01:16 PM

 Forum notifications have been down, and I thought this thread was finished!

Anyway, use the search button to look for posts about how to remove LW. It could probably be done faster than waiting for someone to happen by and notice your post.

Basically--trash the LW folder in the Applications folder, and delete the LimeWire folder and files in the Home Library folder.

The search will probably reveal any more details as you think of them.

Cheers
