I am having a similar problem to many other users in that Limewire tries to start up then unexpectedly quits. I have read all the posts about Java here and have trtied pretty much everything suggested but the problem persists. The error message I get if I were to submit a report to Apple reads (in part):

THis all started happening after I installed Extensis Suitcase X1 - is that just a coincidence?

TearingMyHair Out--kern protection failures are java install problems (not limewire ones), so you are right to suspect a new system install problem.

FWIW, I haven't read of any fingers pointed at extensis, but try a safe boot (to disable any extra kernel extensions) and try again. Have you checked with extensis (Google) for any updates or news?

Reinstalling java from the standalone installer might help, but I'm not sure if the recent 10.3.9 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301382 (WTF--this is probably the one you need) java fix will allow a reinstallation of the standalone.

Sounds like you've already tried the current java install solutions for other problems, so I won't bother reposting the links.

I'm getting exactly the same problem, have had suitcase x1 for months. This started two days ago when I updated to 10.3.9, including the java update. None of the fixes have worked either. I get this message

I guess it depends on knowing how to apply the 'other' techniques or fixes. As Stief said, these issues are generally mac os update related & generally re: Java.

... and not one I would have thought of.

Mac OS X only needs 5 fonts in its System/Library:

Monaco.dfont
LucidaGrande.dfont
LastResort.dfont
Geneva.dfont
Keyboard.dfont

... unless you want to run Limewire in which case it appears you need Helvetica. Once I made this active, Limewire loaded fine.

If you're still having problems, try it!

Hey Vic,

Can't thank you enough for coming up with the Helvetica suggestion, it solved the problem. All makes sense now, I tidied up all (supposely) unnecessary fonts when I installed Suitcase and that's when my Limewire troubles began.

Activating helvetica.dfont has fixed Limewire and also a shutdown problem that I was having if I had run suitcase.
