iMac sleeps suddenly

I installed LW a few months ago and it worked great for some time, suddenly the computer went into sleep mode and could come back after hitting any key then went again into sleep mode after less than a minute again and again. I uninstalled LW and became more stable. After I installed the latest version of LW it did it again with the ever-ending color rolling disk. I disconnected the two USB hubs that I used to use on my PC, restarted it with the installation disk, repaired permissions and inspect hard drive with no negative findings. Still goes to sleep mode with no reason!

The problem began more or less when I started to drag the artwork to the songs. This is the only thing I can think of as far as operation.

Any suggestions???

2 issues here. 1st your computer's sleep mode settings & 2nd LW will go into "Idle mode" after some time if there's been no mouse activity. This has no effect on LW uplding or downlding. It simply closes off one of the connections which isn't being utilised. After all, if you're not at your computer searching then this aspect is not required.

For mac OS sleep settings go to System Preferences> Energy Saver & make appropriate changes to sleep settings for monitor & HDD. I have mine set to never sleep b/c with video work I can't allow the comp to go to sleep. If mac OS goes to sleep it's not always in the best of shape when it wakes up depending on various things such as which apps are open. Hope this helps. :)

sleep mode settings

Hey, thanks for the quick help. I forgot to mention that I set already the screen saver to “never” for monitor & HDD and still does not really care. I understand the idle mode of LW, but it goes to sleep when I am having full activity like surfing, writing an email in entourage or changing the info of a song in itunes, no matter if LW is open or not. I associate it with LW because when I uninstalled it the computer became more stable. I have an imac5 with all updates installed. Any suggestion?

That is odd. No I'm out of ideas. The only other option I could think of would be to make a note of all your LW settings & then delete the LW prefs whilst LW is fully closed. Make a note of the settings b/c once you delete the prefs folder then you'll need to reset the options next time you open LW.

For OSX prefs are found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Please post back & tell us if this improves things or makes no difference. (I wonder if there's a clash of active files on your system.)

no changes after deleting LW prefs

It worked ok all day long yesterday after following the above prefs recommendations. Today morning it went to sleep while downloading a song from LW, using Safari and itunes. I closed all apps, restarted it and only opened Safari with no other app but it went again into sleep mode a few times until shutdown.

Is there a way to chase the clashing / conflict files?

Two other ideas.
(1) do you use an USB modem for your Internet connection ?
(2) you repeated spleep problems may be relating to overheating problem on your iMac. Is your G5 a rev.A.. i.e a machine bought before may 2005 ? Could you download this activity monitor (http://www.gauchosoft.com/index.pl?t...source%20Graph)
and watch your CPU/HardDrive temp ?

(1) I have an Ethernet (RJ45) connection and disconnected all USBs while still occurring.
(2) I thought about the heat. Weird is that yesterday worked well for hours while downloading 10 songs at a time and having a few more apps open (fans were working hard at this time). Today after 20 min of being started it went to sleep as I was writing an email (quiet fans). I will watch the temp and the rev. when I go back home, but I bought it here in Switzerland on October’04 from the ch applepage, so from what you say it must be rev A.

Wit the help pf Xgraph, you should have for a normal machine load (i.e not encoding Divx !):

CPU-T diode Temp: 40-60 C° (above 75 C° =not normal)

Hard Drive Temp: 40-55 C° (hard drive temp above 65 C° can damaged the hard in a long term)

Fans speed: Defaults for Revision A-

1500 CPU
1800 HD
1240 SYS

If something like (A350 take off ;-) )
CPU - 3206 rpm
Hard Drive - 4406 rpm
System - 3325 rpm

not good...

The AppleDiscussion thread on it

A350 take off

Looks like my imac is taking off,
Apps open: Safari, HP Director (scanner) and XRG
CPU T-Dio 64.7°C
Hard drive 43°C
CPU fa 5600 rpm!
Hard Dr 2000 rpm
System 3207 rpm

I took the cover off and vacuum quite a good amount of dust. So thought that that could be the reason but the lectures above are already after removing the dust. Didn't take any of the fans off, just did a superficial cleaning as recommended: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58270

Second lecture:
Apps open: 10 + Finder
CPU T-Dio 72°C
Hard drive 45.5°C
CPU fa 5600 rpm!
Hard Dr 2000 rpm
System 3207 rpm

No vibrations but definitely noise.

Does it looks like doing a deeper cleaning of fans to bring down the temp -> rpms?

The problem of my imac is described here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93988

I have OS X 10.3.9 and my last option was to contact apple. B/c I bought it on Oct'04 the technical support by phone is over (90 days) and I was asked to pay 49usd if I wnated to have the problem analyzed.

I haven't solved the problem but at least I know is not related with Limewire.

philippe99 June 10th, 2005 12:18 PM

Apple will return you your 49 bucks if they detect a hardware problem. Obviously, as you see on the Apple forums, it is the case.

Do not hesitate to ask for a midplane (the motherboard and related stuff): they can send you the replacement stuff (!! upt to two months of delay - they ran out of replacement parts) and you can do the operation: see manuals:
here

Do not hesitate to ask to discuss with the customer support; be quiet but firm and explains it is not normal for a computer (whatever its design is) of less than one year to have security shutdowns because of overheating

Good luck

Thanks for your help. The apple store will receive my imac and repair it. As above mentioned, I think is worth to pay the 279CHF for the Applecare plan.

Cheers,
P

Yes, my G5 is my 5-th Mac machine in my live.
Due to its design, the price of parts, I never imagine not to buy the AppleCare when I buy the machine.

I own a AMD 1.5Ghz PC. I never buy any extra warranty for this machine because I know that I can find at the corner of my street a DVD writer for less than 50 euros, the motherboard for less than 150 euros or the CPU for less than 200 euros.

Obviously, this is not the case with Apple parts and I do not believe the future MacTel machine will help.

AppleCare is not a option, nor a "must have": it is a part of the final Apple price.

problem solved

Thanks to all for your help!

I sent it to apple and they replaced the logic board without any charges.

First of all it doesn't sleep randomly anymore so I am able to work normally without interruptions and secondly I don't feel like working in front of a blender anymore.

Happily I paid the AppleCare protection plan, so hopefully I don't have any problems with the iMac at least until all macs are built with an Intel processor (end of 2007?).
