connection problems-please help!!!

I have run limewire once, and i haven't been able to connect since. I get a message saying that I may not have an active internet connection, which I do, or that I am behind a firewall, which isn't on. I don't understand why I still can't connect.

I have tried to follow the directions of the LW site in regards to connection problems:
[[To open the OS X Firewall for Gnutella access, please do the following:
Open up 'System Preferences'
In 'Internet & Network', open 'Sharing'.
Select the 'Firewall' tab (your Firewall should be on)
Select 'New...'
From the 'Port Name' drop down box, select 'Gnutella/LimeWire'
Select 'OK'
Restart your LimeWire application.]]

However, when i go to port name, Gnutella/Limewire is not listed in the drop down box. I also read through some of these discussions and found that I might need a java update. However, even after i installed the update, it still could not find an internet connection.

I am using a MAC OSX 10.4 tiger. My version of LW is 4.9.30 and version of java is 1.4.2_09. I am on an LAN at school and connection is pretty much DSL. I know it cannot be my school's network because others are able to connect. They use windows, though. Please let me know what you can do for me. I am really desperate!!!

thanks......

Looks like Tiger no longer has a quick setting for LW,

Is your 10.4.2 firewall on? I think it is already off by default.

If it is on, just add port 6346 (TCP andd UDP) to the New->Other Sharing System Preferrences for the Firewall. Name that setting whatever you like ("LimeWire" would be the obvious choice).

Java 1.4.2_09 is the latest for OS 10.4.2 just now, so all should be set up properly
Check for sure by asking to plug into the same cable that "just connects-fine friends" also uses.

Hi...thanks for the reply, but I already tried to do that. It still will not run. I did it again, still nothing. And yes, my connection is fine. Its just the LW connection. I even ran a computer check-up, and my connection passed. Nothing is wrong with it.

Any other suggestions though???

If they can connect to the same line as you, and you can't, try to compare your settings with theirs.

easier said than done. they use different operating systems, more specifically windows.

Flores, you fail to mention in this thread that your Limewire was obtained through a scam site. I feel it would be wise to uninstall it along with the preference folder and start again with a fresh copy from www.limewire.com ... Just a thought.... may help ... I don't knoiw

Nice catch Hobo (sorry I missed that). Deleting the prefs folder (use spotlight to search in the Home folder to find it) shouldn't matter if the LW did indeed come from the official LimeWire site, but it can't hurt. Then redownload the Basic (free) one from the official site at http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml and reinstall.

Were you able to plug your friend's internet cable into your Mac, Flores? Once your new LW is installed, the key settings to compare will be in the Advanced->Firewall section of the LimeWire options. Just use the same settings as your friends, since they have pretty much the same options.

Other than that, the other settings shouldn't matter, since you probably have your Apple Menu->Location->Network Preferences set to "Automatic"
