LimeWire 4.9.37 Pro Freezes Everything for Ages!!! WHY WHY WHY??

Does anyone know why LW 4.9.37 Pro Freezes the Machine...

I have a Powerbook 1.5ghz, Tiger 10.4.3, Java both 1.4.2 and 5

everytime i start limewire and do a search it completely freezes my computer + other apps for ages... I try and force quit, and even the force quitting takes ages to appear.

Basically everything that is open when LW is doing its freeze completely is unusuable.

I have tried running it on both Java versions and the same happens on both....

Does anyone know how to fix this or is having the same problems??

stief November 26th, 2005 09:43 AM

I've seen that a couple of times: it happens when verifying a download.

I did a Safe Boot (restarted and held down the shift key right after the startup sound), then restarted the machine normally, and all was good again.

media991 November 26th, 2005 05:59 PM

Little better but still probs

Thanks Mate

Its working a little better which is good,

however i still get the dreaded 'beachball of death' for a about 5-10 seconds when I use other programs... such as now... i'm trying to type this to you and twice it has shown the beachball so i have to wait until it goes away. Do you know whats up with that???

i guess i can be thankful its not freezing the computer for very lengthy periods of time like before..

:)

Did you do the safe boot?

Shutdown for at least two minutes first . . . that will clear the memory, including the virtual memory--which can really grow and slow everything down.

Try again, and check that you have about 10% of your hard drive free. Once you get below a gig or so, evrything can really start to crawl.

See if that helps

media991 November 26th, 2005 06:38 PM

tried the safeboot again and no joy... still getting the beachball. I've had problems ever since i updated to Tiger... wish their was a fix for this problem, its so frustrating.

Beachball has shown up 3 times just writing this... arggghhhhhhh

:(

is there anything i can do?? apart from just not using limewire anymore...

media991 November 26th, 2005 06:39 PM

Oh yeah dunno if this helps but i have 40 Gb available and 1.5 RAM

stief November 26th, 2005 06:44 PM

Hmmm--your space is fine, so a couple more ideas:

1. Quit everything, and Repair Permissions (using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder).

2. Check Software Update for any new updates.

Restart the macine again (normally)

All should be well this time, I hope.

media991 November 26th, 2005 07:07 PM

sigh... nah didnt work... i have updated everything, reset the permissions and no luck!

Anything else... ???

Why does this seem to have happened since Tiger... used to work great till then

media991 November 26th, 2005 07:09 PM

I have just tried Phex and some other Gnutella programs and they work fine... seems to be limewire only.... weird

stief November 26th, 2005 07:18 PM

no idea now--and Phex uses java too, so I think you're right about it being a LW/Apple/Java conflict.

Well, try again after your machine has been up and running for a while. I'll see if I can find an expert to look at this thread tomorrow.

Could you try installing the "jum version"? It's much the same as the Pro version, but built by Jens-Uwe Mager (a real expert) from LimeWire's open source. Here's the link:

http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html

It would be good to know if it does this too.

Thanks--sorry the attempts at a quick fix didn't work.

media991 November 26th, 2005 07:31 PM

Thats ok.. thanks for your help.. i'll follow the link you just gave and see if this does anything....

media991 November 26th, 2005 07:45 PM

Yeah its still doing it.... i didnt uninstall the other limewire program.. i just dragged your version to the HD and started it...

worked for a little while then started to freeze up again for same amount of time...

stief November 26th, 2005 07:56 PM

Thanks for the info.

There are some more diagnostic tests we should run if you are game (see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=41560 )

media991 November 26th, 2005 07:57 PM

Actually i just tried it again and it doesnt seem to be freezing my other apps this time... its just not letting me use limewire very well.

Now LW seems to freeze or pause for quite a long time before it will continue to search/download... then it will start working again..

The good thing now is that i dont have the beachball up and can use my other apps which is much better!!

We seem to be making progress!!!!!!!!!

media991 November 26th, 2005 08:32 PM

Actually i lie... the beachball has just popped up.

tho i must say... LW is working much better...

Only once over the last half an hour has the beachball shown its ugly face ...which means i cannot use any apps for about 10 seconds... then all goes back to normal..

LW seems to working resonably ok apart from the pauses happening every now and then - These pauses only effect LW not the other apps.. still a little frustrating

media991 November 27th, 2005 01:17 AM

Well my patience has just about ran out... it still freezes other apps for long periods of time....

Just about ready to give up... look forward to seeing what your expert friend thinks of the issue tomorrow...
 :(

A couple of suggestions that may or may not help. Reinstall your Java using the "Offline" installer: Java 1.4.2 for Tiger (click on link)

2. Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption

3. After opening LW, let it settle for 10-25+ mins before using. Allowing it to load incompletes, shared files, & allowing it time to attempt to connect to each incomplete one by one.

Don't use the Resume/Find Sources function on all your files. If you use it, apply it to just one to a few at a time. This function does have side-FX & uses up a lot of LW's resources & can use up a lot of your OS's resources.

It's also been suggested that only keeping the Search/Downld window open & only opening the other windows when needed helps to reduce VM build up. Other similar things to do are to set your uploads & downlds for auto-clear, close old searches that have been there for many hrs (ie: don't allow too many search tabs to accumulate).

Perhaps also, go to LW's Preferences->Speed & tick Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities.

You might also consider this Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! which can give LW a fresh breath of new life.

Well almost suggested everything. lol :D Perhaps, delete your LW preferences whilst LW is "closed". The LW preferences file is called Limewire & is found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Cheers, I'll give these suggestions a go today... will let you know the result... :)

Lord of the Rings November 27th, 2005 04:13 PM

BTW I've a suspicion you're a local going by your time of responses. That's south of new york but west & east of south africa. :D

(Whoops! Sorry ... just jokin')

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...java+and+tiger I think OAHB is thinking of the online installation or OS updates issues. But Stief's suggestion about Java 1.5 sounds very good!

stief November 27th, 2005 04:18 PM

the experts won't be online until tomorrow--so I'll try and get them to take a look here then.

In the meantime . . . :D

--Setting up a new admin user account and installing there is a way to check iif the problem is in the home account, or with the system

--with the latest java update for Tiger, you can tell the system whether to use java 1.4 or 1.5 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301073

You can change the preferred Java version for applications and applets by using the new Java Preferences utility. This utility is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.
I've been using 1.5, and I'm not getting the gui slowdowns any more. Check your "about LimeWire" box to see which version of java you are using

media991 November 27th, 2005 11:34 PM

Cheers, I'll be going through all the suggestions now...

Yep in near the billabong and BBQ in Australia... its now 5.22pm here. :D

media991 November 28th, 2005 01:49 AM

I have found one thing that seems to work... I moved all the files inside my downloads/sharing folder into a new folder so that that my downloads/sharing folder is empty... now it doesnt seem to freeze or stall. The problem with this is now i now can't share with anyone... which isn't very good.

Also as soon as i put the files back into the folder it freezes again :(

I also changed the Java to 1.5 and it seems to work ok...

*** wondering if this helps to solve the mysterious problem***

stief November 28th, 2005 05:14 AM

OK--that confirms that it is a problem with the "verifying" part.

Does it also freeze when completing a larger download? The download will show "verifying file."

media991 November 29th, 2005 04:09 AM

It freezes when i do searches or downloads... doesnt seem to matter if it is a big or small files. Even if i just search for files and do not have anything downloading it freezes.

I have tried it numerous times today with no files in the sharing folder and it seems to work ok, only get freezes every now and then.. especially if i use other programs like adobe products etc...but nothing like what it did when i did have files in there...

media991 December 4th, 2005 05:17 AM

Hey peoples,

Just thought i'd let you know that the problem seems to have gone away... i retried all the suggestions you made and now its not freezing or anything.

Thanks Heaps Everyone!

Peace Out!

stief December 4th, 2005 05:21 AM

Good to hear.

In the meantime, I've managed to make my situation worse trying to duplicate yours :D

btw, an expert did take a look but there was no easy answer.

media991 December 10th, 2005 02:35 AM

Damn sorry to hear that.... Thanks again, i hope you can fix your problem.

Take it easy :)

Bye for now:D
