Intel Core Duo iMac not Compatible with LimeWire

I know there have been several messages regarding this, so I am sorry for that. Like many others, I have just purchased the new iMac Intel Core Duo and it is not working with LimeWire. It won't even let me open it up! What is the solution to this if any?! I hope it won't be complicated... I'm going crazy not being able to download things and limewire's pretty good. Thanks!

The issue may not necessarily be the newer apple computers. Try these things:

1. Try reinstalling your Java using the "Offline" Java installer. I think the most recent one for Tiger is this one: Java 1.4.2 for Tiger (click on link) If it doesn't let you install it because it says it's already installed or the installer give a "Null" error, then go to the Receipts folder & delete the last Java package. See similar example here (this example is for Panther so the version will be different): Receipts folder sample image
* * * However, check which version of Java you have. IF you're using Java 1.5, then you should get this installer Java 1.5 Standalone installer Also if you have Java 1.5, go to your Utilities folder & open the Java utility. Set it to allow LW to use it. See notes about this here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301073

2. Normally after installing new software or updates including system updates, you should repair permissions. Reboot your comp whilst holding down the SHIFT key until you see the window saying Booting into Safe mode or similar message. Then after it's finished booting, go to the Utilities folder, open Disk Utility & Repair Permissions. Then reboot back into normal mode.

Tell us if these things make any difference.

Edit: Ok I hadn't seen this thread. Perhaps you hadn't either but please try the 2 suggestions above anyway. iMac Intel Core-Duo Limewire Does Not Open?!?!?!

Fixed. see http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._history.shtml

Just download the beta

The details are at the bottom of the other intel Mac thread http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...150#post187150

Beta Version 4.10.5

When I click the beta link, it downloads 4.10.3

Any idea where 4.10.5 is?

stief January 19th, 2006 08:29 PM

scroll to the bottom of the page to find the button "BETA DOWNLOADS NOW AVAILABLE!"

I fixed the link to the other Intel Mac thread too. (grrr)

kmag January 19th, 2006 09:53 PM

I downloaded LW 4.10.5 BASIC off the website today at 5:15 PM in order to test it on OS X 10.3 w/ Java 1.4.2.

Just now, I re-downloaded and installed 4.10.5 from the website.

You need to go to the LimeWire BASIC (or PRO if you are a pro customer) download page. Toward the bottom of the BASIC download page is a grey button that will bring you to the BASIC BETA download page. From this final page, there is a link to the BETA.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Stief, the link gave me the new version!

LimeWire Beta still doesn't work

Even the newest version of LimeWire...4.1.5 or whatever, doesn't work with the new Intel iMac. The program actually downloads, but when you attempt to open it, it gets all the way to the "Search" screen (The screen that appears after it asks you to Upgrade to LimeWire PRO) of LimeWire, but shuts down. This really needs to be fixed...

The "newest version of LimeWire" in fact does not work on an Intel iMac. You need to get the BETA (prototype) version. If you download "the latest", you get 4.10.3. My best guess is that within a few days we'll build and release a production version that runs on the Intel iMacs.

What you're seeing as the "newest version" is actually several versions old. Once we like one of our prototypes, we make what's called a beta build. People can download the beta and play around with the new features. Sometimes people discover bugs in the beta, or the beta testers have good suggestions for small tweaks. It's this prototype version that has the "fat" libraries for PPC and i386 Mac OS X.

Thanks for checking kmag.
Perhaps the jum build will work until LW can restore the links to the beta? Jum's build might still be based on the pre-release beta http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html

otherwise, I'll share yesterday's release. Folks can search for "LimeWireOSX4.10.5 BETA.dmg" or message me and I'll send the magnet link.

No... there's nothing wrong with the LW site. It's just fairly common for people to get confused and download a production version instead of a beta.

stief January 22nd, 2006 12:04 AM

Hmm--I'm confused. After you posted I checked LW's site, and the release version is listed as 4.10.5, and the beta links had been removed from the download page and the Pro page.

I guess zab moved 4.10.5 into production either on Friday or this weekend. I was actually out sick on Friday. I didn't expect this to happen until early next week, but the beta was looking pretty solid.

The poster's confusion over the version number that he downloaded doesn't give me confidence that he found his way to the beta download page. (Finding the beta download page can be a little tricky. The regular download pages have nice big red buttons to click, while the beta has a grey button to click. This helps prevent people from accidently downloading a beta.)

We were racing the G5 iMac against the Core Duo iMac on Thursday, comparing LW startup speed and gui responsiveness on the 4.10.5 beta.

I just now downloaded the latest LW to check it out... and it looks like Mac JNI libraries we're shipping somehow got "thin" (only PPC code) while the Mac libraries in cvs are still "fat" (PPC and i386 code).

If you're familiar with the Mac command line, the following command will tell you if the native libraries support the Core Duo Macs:

lipo -info /Applications/LimeWire/LimeWire.app/Contents/Resources/Java/*.jnilib

The output should tell you that each and every library has both PPC and i386 code.

I'm working to get to the bottom of this, but I was out on Friday, and it's 4 a.m. Sunday morning here. I'll keep you posted.

Update: "lipo" on OS X Panther doesn't appear to detect fat libraries. Rogerk assures me that the libraries didn't magically get thin.

On a side note: why does Apple ship a version of lipo that doesn't detect fat libraries? I thought that was the whole reason for calling the tool "lipo".
