Downloading fast on Windows but not Mac OS X on Campus Network

hi,

I am running an iBook with Mac OS X 10.4.5, the latest. Limewire used to download at high speeds like up to 50k while I was on a college campus network. However, recently it's been slowed down to only 1 or 2k, returning to the high speeds when I am at home on DSL.

What's interesting is my friends who own PCs are still getting the same speeds while using Limewire. My computer is not slow since it is very new, and I'm wondering what difference in either preferences or the hardware that is making my Windows friends download faster then me?

thanks.

check what port they are using, or plug your machine into their conection. There shouldn't be a difference, but the University network admins might have allocated different limits.

Since your machine connects fine at home, it looks like your machine is running into bandwidth limits on the university network.

Speed and connection issues

Actually I got something similar happening to me. At home I'm on DSL and when I launch LimeWire (4.10 Pro) it runs just fine (Turbo-charged) for about five minutes than gradually dropps speed all the way down to 1-2k per downloads, or even 0k. I have a maximum of 8 downloads running at once. The connection indicator on the lower left bottom also slowly drops down and about after 10 minutes it loses connection completely. Then it gets it back to about 'poor connection', but loses it again and on and on.

If I quit LimeWire at this point and relaunch it again, it always starts in turbo charged mode but the story starts all over. Few minutes and start slowing down finally drops out completely.

I don't run any other programs for testing purposes and I cleared out my library too so those won't effect performance. Basicaly it's a clean system that starts downloading a few files.

My system: G4 dual 533, OS X 10.3.9, 1 Gig ram, DSL 1.2 mbps.

thanks for the suggestions, i will check what ports my friends are using and post the results tonight or tomorrow.
