Default disk error error in lw 4.10.9 - dls.dat/bak gone again

i've just had the opportunity to test out the lw back up utility for real, as it were, sooner than i'd have liked. i'm using lw 4.10.9 on os x 10.2.8 and i just got for each file lw attempted to dl "disk error" in the file's status and for each file that happened for the progress bar went straight to 100%. this is exactly the same as the problem i had just recently had with lw 4.2.6 except for then the error was called "could not move to library" but apart from the error name everything is the same from what i can tell -- although this time there was a downloads.dat file (but no .bak file) but the .dat file was much smaller than it was before the error(s) -- i suppose for everyfile that it got disk error for, and therefore deemed done, it removed from the dl.dat file -- i think the reason there was any dl.dat file at all is because i caught this as it was happening. if it'd been left there would have been no dl.dat file left i suspect.

i've gone back to a previous dl.bak file that was backed up that looked a reasonable size (from about an hour before i noticed the problem) and now, from that, it seems ok again after a restart.

but i'm sure it is the same problem as the previous problem i had in 4.2.6 just with a different name. any ideas what this is? without the bu utility running i'd have lost all those dls yet again. be better if i didn't have to rely on the bu utility.

any ideas what's going on?

other than this problem my drive seems to be functioning absolutely fine and it's only a year old. reason i say that is because a malfuntioning drive would probably explain this but i don't think it's that.
