Limewire won't install I can't open the dmg. I'm new here and have read loads of threads, and have included a few suggestions in other threads. My limewire dmg downloads, but when I double click on it I can't open it. I have plenty of space. When I couldn't open the dmg, I deleted it, emptied the trash did disk utility repair, restarted computer. Went to the OSX Firewall instructions posted by Lord of the Rings, downloaded the Java 5.0 but I couldn't load it as the hard disk had a red exclamation mark. Rechecked and I had already an updated version. I then downloaded limewire once again - this time when I double clicked on the dmg I got the message "not recognised" ! Have no idea where to go from here. Hope someone out there has an idea for me. Thanks in advance Matilda These are some more answers to the questions, but I don't think they are relevant. Mac OSX 10.4.8 Only firewall ticked is Gnutella/Limewire 768 MB DDR SDRAM 18.11 GB available HD space Broadband Linksys ADSL Gateway AG041- UPnP is enabled. If you're using OS 10.4.8 then it should already have Java 5 installed. You can check by going to the Utilities folder, Java > J2SE 5.0 How did you download the LW installer? Definitely do not use internet Explorer because it can't handle dmg files & you end up with an incomplete dmg file. Download it with Safari. Then drag & drop it onto Disk Copy if it doesn't open automatically. Do you have stuffit expander? If yes, disable it from handling dmg files. It doesn't always handle them properly. Let us know how you get on. |
Thanks for your suggestions. I have java 5. Internet explorer is gone from my computer as it no longer worked. I used safari to download limewire. I disabled stuffit as you suggested and then tried to open it in disk utility and I got this message." Unable to attach " Limewire" Not recognised. |
1 Attachment(s) You need Disk Copy to work for most OSX programs so I'm not sure how you're dealing with others. You can see my Disk Copy settings below. Did you try to manually drag & drop the dmg onto Disk Copy? Select the LW.dmg file & go to file menu & choose get info. What is the default program suggested to open it? Mine is DiskImageMounter. Have you done a Safe Boot & Repair permissions lately? SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions Attachment 3057 |
The disk copy settings don't show up I get a blue box with a ? in it. I did do a drag and drop with the dmg onto disk copy. At the moment I haven't got a limewire dmg on my computer I am trying to clean up first. I am about to do a safe boot and repair permissions and then I will download a new copy of limewire and do as you suggested, I will get back later. Thanks |

Select the LW dmg file & get info. You can set the default as below. And set to always use by Change All option. Attachment 3109 |
When I selected LW dmg and went to file get info, it did say open with DiskimageMounter (default). The change all was grayed out. I did do a safe boot and repair permissions last night. I have downloaded a new dmg of LW. I dragged it into disk utility left side window clicked file open and got this message. " Unable to attach "LimewireOSX.dmg" - not recognized. Just as I did before. By the way. When I come to this page without logging in I can see the links. As soon as I log in the links go and I can't click on them. As I said I get a blue box with a ? in the middle of it. I went to disk utility preferences and I have checked Verify checksums skip on remote volumes auto-open read-only disk images. Thanks for you help |
Try this ... go to Utilities folder, open Disk Utility, go to File menu, choose Open Disk Image & direct it to the location of the LW.dmg file. |
I did what you suggested and I got the same message. " Unable to attach "LimewireOSX.dmg" - not recognized. Just as I did before. I trashed my original Limewire instead of uninstalling could that be the problem. I can't download just an uninstall can I ? I down loaded other dmgs today just to see if they would open and I didn't have any worries with those. I found Cabos-0.6.6MacOSX.zip but I didn't download it because it isn't a dmg. I don't want the application, it is because it seemed as though it was a similar type of program that I looked at it. Thank you |
I have a couple of ideas. Let's try this one 1st: download the beta created by Jum: http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/ & see if you can mount that one. |
2nd: Let's by-pass using a browser. Go to Utilities folder & open Terminal. Type this in (or copy-paste): curl -L -o LimeWire.dmg "http://www.limewire.com/LimeWireSoftOSX" Then try to mount that image after it's completed downloading. You will find it in your user account folder. eg: OSX > Users > Lotr |
In answer to #10 I went to the mager address you gave me. I couldn't download using either safari or firefox from the 2nd choice given but I could from the first ( http ) I got it to open and attach I got the usual interface however I don't get any results. This window came up LimeWire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connectd to the network. I went to file and connect was grayed out. I'm now going to try the suggestion in #11 Thank you. |
So at least you were able to mount the jum version & run it. Did you run it from the mounted dmg or drag the program into your applications folder & run from there? It sounds to me like you also have a firewall issue. Can you also answer these questions: System details - help us to help you (click on link) |
I followed the instructions and took the folder to the hard disk and ran from there. I think all the answers to the questions on the link you mentioned are in my initial posting. Please let me know if I have left something out. Thank you |
Who is your ISP? And this one confuses me "yes I saw the blue brick wall" if you didn't have LW installed. Did you try the 2nd download location I gave using the terminal? |
My ISP is Internode. Sorry I can't remember how I saw the blue brick wall as I answered those questions awhile before I actually made a posting. Yes I did manage to download limewire from Terminal and am trying to use it now, however I got a blue ball with a red brick wall down the bottom of the limewire window. The status says need more resources Thanks |
In preferences in Limewire firewall connections the listening port is set at 28088 the router configuration checked is Use UPnP (Rrecommended) This is different to what the firewall in my computer says The only firewall I have checked is Gnutella/Limewire Port Name other TCP Port Number 6346 UDP Port Number 6346 Also I have been experiencing internet problems since I got Limewire installed. Probably not related but it might help knowing this. The ADSL and Internet lights go off and the power switch goes red!! Thanks |
Change the listening port in LW to 6346. Else change the OSX firewall to port 28088. I'd try 6346 1st. Good to hear at least you have it installed. That's a start! :D Is your computer a G5? I presume with DDR ram it is. And is it a desktop model or ibook or imac, etc.? BTW a firewall in OSX is "arguably" not really necessary. I rarely have mine turned on. Only if I'm browsing some possibly suspect sites will I turn it on. But that's me. Something about the mac community I think. Not quite as paranoid as windows users. :D |
OK I have changed the LW listening port tp 6346. My computer is a G4 iMac Are you saying I have a firewall turned on and it isn't necessary. If this is the case how do I turn it off ? Also in the bottom left corner of LW I have the numbers 23 what does that stand for please. ? I have downloaded something that I can't delete, in itunes and I can't find it in my shared folder. Can you tell me how to deal with that or where to go to find out. Thank you |
OSX firewall: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...86&postcount=5 23 will mean how many files you are sharing I suspect. That's how many files will be in your shared folder. Do you have iTunes set to automatically import songs? You can find it in iTunes if you arrange by date added; http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...89&postcount=4 & another good one to see with sample image is this one http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...88&postcount=6 For fast & easy access, go to your LW Library window, select Saved Files folder & press the Explore button. Sample image here: Using Library Explore button to access downld folder (click on link) & the folder will open up for you. Then you can do whatever with it. BTW you might not be able to delete a file if it's being shared. You would need to close LW to delete it or else, unshare that file. You can do that by finding it in the Library window & control-click & choose stop sharing file. To delete a song in iTunes, select it, & press delete key. Then you'll have a choice between moving it to trash or just removing it from the iTunes list. But if you do that it will still be on your computer. |
I followed the instructions for the firewall you gave me, and got everything else sorted out. I tried using LW for a short while and all went well.I didn't get back to LW until this morning and now it opens, but before I can even start to use it - it shuts down. I followed the instructions given in the posting below mine, took out the preference folder of LW and deleted it. I then did a disk permissions and software update, nothing. Did a restart and still nothing!! Strange that it actually worked for awhile before I changed the firewall according to your instructions. |
If you have the start up disk, start up with the one that has utilities folder on it. To start up with such a disk, hold down C key whilst booting. THen go to utilities folder & open Disk Utility. Do NOT repair permissions from this disk because the permissions will be different. Instead use Repair Disk option. Hopefully this will repair whatever's wrong. Then reboot normally & try again. Out of curiosity may I ask which state you're living in. |
I'll do that now. I am working in imovie so yesterday I was giving LW a rest. I live in South Australia, and you? Thanks for your on going help. |
The Garden state ... Vic But it's been a dry garden last couple of years. :D |
I've got an old powerbook but I have 10.4.8 on it and the updated Java. I thought I would have a go at downloading LW onto this and am coming up against the same problems. Does this mean it is happening to many of us? I have just downloaded the 1st new address and I got the same thing, it opened up but nothing came into the main window. Because I am having the same trouble on 2 computers I feel it might be something I am not doing. I feel it might be the firewall is there anyway I can send you screenshots? |
Are you sure you have UPnP enabled on your Linksys device? Double-check. Go to LW's prefs, keyboard shortcut is apple/command key & comma ⌘ , Go to advanced -> Firewalls & check that it's set to UPnP. Go to Speed setting & disable ultrapeer settings. Set the speed which is equivalent to your connection speed. I set it at modem because my speed is only 256 kbps. Likewise make appropriate settings in slider for downloads & uploads options. Go to Connections & disable connect at start up. Instead, wait a few mins after opening. Then go to File menu -> Connect. You can post attachments in your post if you wish. Max size is 100 KB per image & 5 images per post. You need to press Post Reply or Go advanced to get image attachment options. |
Yes UPnP is enabled. When I went to Limewire Preferences and advanced the listening port was 41455, it definitely was 6346 before. Anyway I did change it. Now the speed settings I set to modem, I have 512 but I had it set DSL before and it didn't work so I changed it. Ultra peer and OOB I have checked. Downloadbandwidth and upload bandwidth had the slider set to 100%. I unchecked connect on startup |
This is the message I got. Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network. Also there is still the redbrick wall behind the blue ball in the LW window. |
Limewire won't install 1 Attachment(s) Disk copy should be in disk utility right? I have been going over your posts doing the steps one by one on my laptop. I came across the disk copy step and the way your looks is very different to mine. I decided to include a screen shot so you could see where I am and what I am talking about. |
Your image is disk utility. Disk Utility & Disk Copy are 2 different programs. However Disk Utility can do a few of the things Disk Copy can do anyway. Both can be found in the Utilities folder. Arrange the utilities folder by list & you'll probably see both side by side. I notice you have LW jum mounted. Are you running LW from the mounted image or from your applications folder? |
Limewire won't install 1 Attachment(s) I'm having a real senior moment here. I cannot see disk copy!! Here is a screen shot of my utilities folder |
I am trying to run LW from the applications folder. I put LW in disk utility for the screen shot and opened it. |
That's odd. Check your applications folder. It looks like that's the reason you were having so many problems mounting the image. At least Disk Utility can also mount images, but you should also have disk copy. Try an OS search for it using Sherlock search. |
I haven't got sherlock, as I haven't OS9 but I did a spotlight search for "disk copy" and only disk utility came up. I also did a search in the top of the finder window but only disk utility came up. When I want to copy a disk I use disk utility I was thinking it was the same application |
1 Attachment(s) No ... sounds like something was wrong the your OSX installation. Did you check your startup disk to see if it's on there. By startup disk I mean the installation disk. If it's not on there then perhaps the imac's don't have it. But that sounds strange. I could ask other OSX members whether Disk Copy comes with imacs. The search function was still called sherlock in Panther 10.3 so perhaps that's where I got confused since I have both 10.3 & 10.4 & OS 9 on this computer. I did a search found it & found 3. One on each partition I have OS's installed. I didn have Tiger installed on my OSX partition so perhaps it's remnant or perhaps it's still called sherlock. |
When I put in my installation disk to do disk repair, it kept going back to the desk top, the normal language etc didn't come up. I put in the tiger disk and it came up, so I used that disk, is it any use putting that disk in to check whether or not there is disk copy? Or is this getting away from the problem in hand and diverting? |
Gee that was quick. You came & went before I added the image. lol :D Yes have a look in the utilities folder of that disk to see if it's there. Or even the applications folder if there is one on that disk. (BTW I believe the new 10.5 Leopard will drop sherlock completely & only have Spotlight.) |
I found sherlock in my applications folder, but I can't see there is a way to use it for this function. It has internet, applecare, eBay, flights, Dictionary,Translation in the top tool bar!!! I'll go and look for disk copy |
Yes you're right. Just I believed the Finder's Find command was also known as sherlock but perhaps I'm mistaken. :o I've never used that application itself. |
Nope I cannot find Disk Copy!! |
Back to the connections issue. If your OSX firewall is turned off & then you should not be seeing a brick wall. That's if your Linksys UPnP is working properly. BTW in UPnP mode, the router may decide to change the listening port itself. THe other option I can think of is port forwarding. Is it possible to by-pass the linksys device ... do you have any other connection devices? Just to check whether Linksys is the issue here. How old is your Linksys device? Have you checked for firmware upgrades? |
I can hardly believe this, but last night I put an old version of limewire 4.0.4 pro, I think it was onto my external hard drive and it worked!! No probs. I was so excited I down loaded for awhile using it attached to my old powerbook and at the same time worked on my movie problem on my iMac. So..... nothing can be wrong with the router, surely. To answer your questions. I have had this router for about 2 years, and I have voip node phone connected to it, had some trouble when I set that up about 6 months ago, but once I upgraded the firmware all was well. When you say by-pass the linksys device do you mean go dial up? So where do I stand now. I can't use limewire on either my powerbook or iMac. Should I delete what I have and try to install this old copy I have on a cd, I must have put it there for safe keeping. I found it by mistake when I was looking for slick to reinstall for imovie. Maybe you want to give me the flick now that I have LW running on something. BUT I really would like it to work on the iMac. Have you any other suggestions at all. I have taken screen shots of all my settings on the external and am about to check the ones on my iMac. Thanks for your time and your help. Bad luck an Aussie didn't win yesterday, not that I take any notice, couldn't help but find out the result on the news!!! |
Go to Limewire->Preferences and click on the Bug Reports selection. There, click for an example and scroll down to the part where it says: Recieved incoming this session. If it says true then Limewire does not have a problem from a Firewall. If it says false, then Firewall(s) are blocking the connection which will affect you at least indirectly. |

The reason 4.0 can connect easily is because it doesn't have the condition of "must be properly firewall configured" to be able to connect. But that theme in general is not good for the network because imagine another hundred thousand or many more saying they can connect but only very rarely upload. That would mean minimal search results or connetibility for everybody. |
I haven't put this version on my iMac yet, but I plan to, and if it works I might stick to it, even though I would like to get the new Limewire Pro. I might get it and not be able to use it. Last time I did a clean install I only put on my mac what I used continually, forgot about LW until I needed it. |
LW 4.0.4 Pro is on my iMac but won't connect. Down the bottom LH corner it has red walls, says Quality Connecting Sharing 27 files In the top bar by the coloured buttons it says Limewire: enabling Open information sharing (disconnectd /no files available) Under file I have connected grayed out but I get a message telling me to connect under file. I have checked the ports firewalls etc, but I am going to go over your emails once again incase I missed something. Thank you |
If connect is greyed out, then select disconnect, wait a minute, then try the file menu again. Rather than use LW 4.0.4 may I suggest LW 4.8.1 which I can send you. It's a much better version & before the firewall requirement test came in (4.9 introduced that.) |
