Cannot open Limewire on Mac OSX 10.4.11 Hi guys. Im hoping someone can really help me.. I am a bit of a Mac novice and am having problems with Limewire. I am running Mac Tiger 10.4.11 and have downloaded the latest version of Limewire for Mac from official LW website. When i try to install, it takes FOREVER for setup to complete, but it eventually does. When i then go to my applications folder and double click on the LW startup icon, the LW logo bounces up and down a couple of times in my Object Dock and then disappears and the program doesn't open at all. I thought this may be down to a Java problem, so 1) I performed a software update on my Mac and installed latest Java version. Then Limewire told me it needed v5.0 or above to work. So I went back to java and downloaded v.50 for mac, but still to no avail... Every other program on my mac works fine - just limewire! Does anybody know what the problem could be? Just as a final thought.... When i click on the Limewire command within the MACOS folder, this is what appears in Terminal: [LaunchRunner Error] The main class "com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main" could not be found. [JavaAppLauncher Error] CallStaticVoidMethod() threw an exception Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException at apple.launcher.LaunchRunner.run(LaunchRunner.java: 85) at apple.launcher.LaunchRunner.callMain(LaunchRunner. java:50) at apple.launcher.JavaApplicationLauncher.launch(Java ApplicationLauncher.java:52) logout [Process completed]" Thanks so much for any help.... |
Did you move Java 1.5 up to the top of the list?: Setting up Java 1.5 :) |
Hi there! Just looked at your post, and yes Java 5 is top of my list (well in fact i don't have a drop down menu option to pick a Java version as such - i only have 2 radio buttons - either J2SE 1.4.2, or J2SE 5.0 Could you help me? Thanks |
I have the same exact problem macuser101. I have moved Java 1.5 to top. It didn't help. I run mac OS 10.4.11. I downloaded a new version of limewire but it won't open or connect. I didn't have a problem before running the old version. I deleted the old version including the preference setting. I noticed that new version does not install and new preference folder. I am thinking this is the problem. If you think so, how do I restore the preference setting? I have deleted and installed limewire 4 times. No change. I need help. thanks, tmak |
Which version of LW did you try to install? Is it LW 4.18 or LW 5? LW 4.18 requires Java 5 (1.5) so you need to make sure that's near the top in your Java preferences, found in your Utilities folder. :) |
So basically if we're using 10.4.11 we can't use version 5.0 Since I've already installed 5.0 I'm screwed. (I think the reason I went to Tiger in the first place a few years ago was so I could get Limewire to work. I'm not upgrading OS's again for that.) So can we still download the previous version? (even though it was only working "so-so" ?? |
Thanks for reply. The version I have reinstalled is 4.18.8 (the one compatible with OS 10.4.11). It still doesn't work. I think it has to do with preferences setting. Do you know how to restore that? |
I'm happy again... for now. I just remembered I had a copy of 4.18.8 on a backup HD. Sadly of course... I will be stuck with it until I can afford a new computer, which won't be any time soon. |
I wouldn't cry too much about missing out on the new version. There's been many complaints because LW left out many tools. And navigating can be confusing for users. Quote:
I presently use LW 4.16 on one OSX & 5 on the other. Have you ever been able to run 4.18.x? |

version 4.16 Hi, Does any one know where can I download LW 4.16 for mac? Versions 4.18 and 5 don't work for me. 4.16 is not available for download on LW site. thanks |
erm .. I have LW 4.16. Download link sent via PM. :) |
Lord of the Rings, help me please! I have replaced my LW 4.18 (I think) version with the current LW 5.11 and since I have OS X 4.11 it won't run - I can't find a way to revert to my previous version of limewire... help please I would REALLY appreciate it! |
1 Attachment(s) 1. Go to your Mac OSX drive, open it up. Open Library folder, then Receipts folder, find Install LimeWire.pkg & trash it. Example of where to find it here: Receipts folder sample image 2. Find LW 4.18 here: Older Versions for LimeWire & download the version for OSX 10.4 :) Install this version. With the newer version Receipt you would not be able to install the older LW so it needs to be removed first. ;) (b) I gave the direct link above, but normally you will find the 'Older Versions' link on the right-side of the normal LW download page. It's on the left-side of the page for Pro users' personal download page. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...sions-link.gif . |
thanks, but how do you install it? Hi Lord of the Rings, thanks for the reply. I did step a) and b) alright - but when I downloaded (I had Pro by the way) the older version of Limewire, it downloads to desktop and when you double click on the folder it does not open the usual install window with the drop to Applications illustration. Just a folder full of stuff -50 or 60 items - I don't understand :confused:and don't know what to do with. Help please (again!:rolleyes_2:) Sandra |
I trashed the newest version of Limewire and placed the funny folder with the 50 .jar bits in the applications folder. Now all I get is a ? on the LW icon in the Dock. ???? OOops?! |
Ok, sorry, took a second look and it seems I had downloaded a REALLY old version that was not for OSX. DUHHHHHH!!! now I downloaded LW 4.18 and it works fine - only thing is I no longer have PRO.... ;-( |
oh ? How did your Pro support finish? |
Finish? don't think it did - I had 4.18 PRO saw there was an update but didn't read the thing properly about JAVA and OS X Tiger so downloaded 5.11 and was left with nothing. Now, I did what you told me and the Limewire I have now, 4.18 is basic not Pro - can I get Pro back? without paying again that it...? |
When did you purchase Pro? Did you get 6 or 12 months extended support? You can go to the LW Support page & enter your email address. Link at top of page: http://www.limewire.com/support/ I usually recommend pro users bookmark their personal download page. If pro support was nearing an end, you'd receive emails from them warning you. |
Lord of the Rings: You say: "(...) normally you will find the 'Older Versions' link on the right-side of the normal LW download page. It's on the left-side of the page for Pro users' personal download page." I can't find this link... Obviously if I could keep my Pro I would prefer that... |
Did you check your email account for email from LW support ... or go to the Support page & enter your email address. ;) |
Hi Lord, Yr advice sounds like just what I need. I have the same issue. Mac OS X 10.4.11 and updated to LW 5 but no good on my machine. Downloaded then tried in stall LW 4.18 but won't install, probably due to need to remove the LW 5 as you say. My question; how to remove the LW 5 from the system? Presumably then I can install the 4.18? Did you write earlier that yr in Victoria, Australia? Shocking news about the fires; it's getting lots of attention and concern here in Europe. Thanks Quote:

Remove the Instal Limewire.pkg from Receipts folder, found in system drive > Library > Receipts; sample image: Receipts folder sample image Yes, around 200 lives lost in the fires. :( I got back from a holiday in Thailand, but it was hotter here, 40-45 C / 105-110+ F for over a week. It was at the end of this period that the bushfires started. |
thanks lord, it worked a treat once I got to the correct folder to delete hope it cools down soon down there; it's extraordinary! |
