Can't start Limewire 5 in Mac OSX

I have Limewire 5 and Mac OSX with a cable connection. My cable went out this morning and I reset Safari to try to get connected. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but now if I try to start LW, nothing happens. I tried re-installing it and that didn't work either. Seriously, my well-being depends on this program, so Please Help Me!!

Not sure if you updated Java recently but it's caused problems for several people. Your answer might be re-installing Java: Apple - Downloads - Application Updates - Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 & then do a Safe reboot & repair permissions then reboot normally. ;)

How to do a Safe Boot? = Hold down SHIFT key whilst Booting up until you see the apple icon. You will then be required to login. Open Disk Utility found in Utilities folder & repair permissions on OSX. Then reboot normally. :)

If still problems install the beta version of LW: LimeWire 5.2.2 (Beta) - Lime Wire (if you are using LW 5 I mean.)

Okay, the Java/Safeboot thing didn't work, but the Beta LW did. Not sure what the difference is with Beta, but it works, so that's all I care about. Thank you!!!! My life can continue as normal. :super:

java update this morning broke limewire

Neither of the suggestions has worked for me. How do we revert to the previous java release? Limewire does not run with todays update. And why is it necessary to repair permissions?

Lord of the Rings June 20th, 2009 11:15 AM

Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X
Permissions should be repaired after installing any Mac update & is best done after installing or updating any large 3rd party program also.

any help after a java update?

Limewire no longer works after the java update this morning. I have tried reinstalling the latest java update (again) and also I have tried the Limewire beta. Nothing works. This is the pro edition of limewire - I PAID for it but there doesn't seem to be any company support for the product. Any ideas from anyone? I also tried restoring from time machine but there is an error on the complete disk and one is unable to restore the system library (where java resides) because the os needs the library. Is anyone at Limewire there? I can't be the only person having the problem.

Did you also try a safe boot & repair permissions as LOTR suggests in post #2?

I'm not a Mac user, so if you've already tried that then you'll need to wait until LOTR is online again for more advice:)

We aren't LW employees - just users who help here as volunteers;)

terryo June 21st, 2009 06:42 AM

not employees

I am aware that the people who help in the forum are not LW employees. However, there doesn't appear to be any support avenue for those who pay for the software. There is no help ticket system and it doesn't appear that LW people monitor the forums either. The ver 5 release of Limewire for the Mac crashes every day - many times. It is extremely unstable. It has NEVER made it through the night - and my ability to access the preferences broke at least a month ago and has never been repaired. I am a very unsatisfied customer and I am looking for an alternative P2P platform.

The business about permissions doesn't make any sense. I have never heard anyone else suggest that this is a requirement after an os update. I will try it but under protest. And if it works I will give full credit.

java update problem

OK I tried repairing permissions as well - Limewire still doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

Java update breaks limewire 5

I went back to version 4.18 and it works.

so help ?

Under mac OS X you always repare authorisations after an update 8 But in this case it doesn't help, because the Java update has some difficulties...
Use this thread for more info and if there are still questions I would be glad to help you where ever I can, but in that case I would need more info about your computer, your OS version, did you do ALL the updates etc.

Good luck !!

I just had the same issue today - had been fine recently but installed my Mac updates and could no longer launch LW. So I had to get an older version off another site. While it's annoying that it's constantly flashing that there is an update available - until LW realizes that the Java update makes their new version fail. We're stuck. They specifically made the new version for our Macs (Leopard 10.5+, Intel) but obviously didn't account for other program updates.

I'd have suggested LW 4.16 instead. But your choice. ;) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/mac-os...ck-lw-4-a.html & see the LW 4.16 link.

LW Pro do give support if you are still a valid customer: Pro Support

Else, try the beta LimeWire 5.2.2 (Beta) - Lime Wire
If you are a pro user, you can find the link to LW Beta Pro on right side of your Pro download page as shown here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/345055-post6.html

I must admit, I had same problem with LW 5 not running. I did as I suggested & LW 5.2.2 runs fine.

Mac - Java update

The beta of 5 did not work for me - and 4.18 seems to work fine. I will stick with that until LW fixes the problem. And thanks for the support link - i actually did find it eventually on my own. The response was to send me to their download page to get the current version again and re-install. It was I believe an automated response to my problem category - rather useless advice. Hopefuly we will get a quick response from LW - there are a lot of people affected here and on other threads I see. The beta works for some, not others.

Two OSX's .. tried 4.16 & 5.2 on both & they worked fine, only 5.1 didn't work.

I found my browsers are slow as after the Java update. Feel as though I'm using dial up on OS 9 at times. lol :D Though Firefox is definitely handling the new java better than the new Safari.
