using Limewire Friends via Facebook on a Mac

Hi.
LimeWire v. 5.2.10
Java v. 1.6.0_11
Windows XP Professional (don't jump on me, I know this is the Mac forum)

When using the LimeWire friends application on LimeWire, I have no trouble logging on to my Facebook account and selecting friends with which to share files. However, my brother, who uses a Mac, can't log on to Facebook via LimeWire Friends. When he tries to log on, the option to do so is not even presented (only the other 3 are). I'm trying to find out how I can share files with him, so is this a universal problem? Or can we share files another way? thanks very much.

Needs to update to LW 5.2.13 to fix the facebook issue. :) This issue was fixed in this version. ;) http://wiki.limewire.org/index.php?title=Changelog
As for XP, I use it via running Paradox on my OSX. The advantage is I don't need to reboot to run windows, and runs in its own window.

thanks, but i checked the version of limewire he's running and he does in fact have 5.2.13 for OSX. Is there any kind of update he can download?

Lord of the Rings August 26th, 2009 05:45 PM

That's it. That is the latest version & it specifically fixed the facebook issue. Or should have. So I'm not sure.

Perhaps he should make a note of all his settings, close LW, delete the LW preferences folder (but remove the Downloads.dat file first), then open LW. Close it, replace the new downloads.dat file with the older one so he does not lose his old downloads history. I know that sounds like a lot of mucking around. But if he has come through using many versions of LW, his preferences might be partially corrupted. Explained here Deleting LW Preferences folder in OSX.

Oh .. and tell your friend to double-check there are no older versions of LW on his system. That might also affect things. Are you 'sure' your friend has LW 5.2.13? Your version is 5.2.10 so I suspected maybe your friend has same version. http://www.limewire.com/download/

BTW .. you could also suggest he/she set up a Test account, run LW there experimentally to see if same problems; Setting up a Test Account in OSX (click on link). Setting up & deleting an account on OSX is very easy & fast. 30-60 seconds to set up or delete; at least after you've done it once before. :)

Hi
First of all, am i glad there is someone to help. Thank You LOTR.
I downloaded LM5.2.13 a while ago and i have the same problem. Also i tried each n everything u suggested. Even till reinstalling but i forgot 2 keep aside the download.dat file. Is it because of that?

What else am i supposed to do.

This may or may not help, if you/your friend tries the OSX LW 5.3.0 beta version: LimeWire 5.3.0 (Beta) - Lime Wire

If your friend has an alternative hard disk drive or partition & enough space, could experiment by installing a second OSX system upon there to see if same problem occurs. eg: I was unable to use LW 5 for several months on my main OSX drive, but it did work on an alternative OSX installation on same computer. I think a reinstallation or OSX update eventually fixed my problem.

The Downloads.dat file is where your download history is stored. It keeps a record of your file download percentages.

I think you are correct about updating. Its been almost 6 months since I've updated the MAC OS X software. My Mac downloads and updates all softwares except the MAC OS X update. This I suppose is since the last time I re-installed my Mac due to locking my hard-disk permanently. Everything else since the re-installation works just fine except for the Mac Update (which completes download but gets stuck at installing).

Also on start on pressing alt/option for the partitions it shows 3 disks, 2 Mac HDDs and one Windows (since re-installation). Whereas it doesn't even display the extra one when i thought of deleting it by using Disk Utility.

Any fix for that? May be this can fix the rest.
Thanks :)

It is possible to download the macupdates as combined update file. It's usually very large & is called a Combo update, and is installed offline, not over the internet. Apple - Downloads - Mac OS X Updates - Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update

BTW I discovered I have the same problem. My OSX LW 5 also does not give the Facebook option. I have not yet heard back from the LW devs.

Re: startup disk: you will only see the startup options in Preferences -> Startup disk. Disk utility will only see drives.
So you do have two mac startup drives. I presume they are both OSX.

(I used to have a windows xp installation using bootcamp but the windows installation kept corrupting. And it was annoying having to reboot to get into windows. I now use a virtual windows via using Parallels. With Parallels I now have 2 x XP's and 2000. And can run all at same time in separate windows. Files drag & droppable between OSX & windows.)

Re: Update: I have the OSX 10.5.5. I tried both, the 10.5.6 & 10.5.7 update but in vain. So may be i'll try the 10.5.8 this time, I hope that works.

Re: Startup Disk: The only thing is that one extra disk which I wish to delete. The extra disk shows up only on start up (on pressing alt/option). But it won't be seen under Disk Utility neither Startup Disk. And yes, there are two Mac OSX (the first two) the second one will not start, only the first one will and the third one is Windows Vista.

P.S: I was provided with Parallels too but after installing Vista it refused to open it. So i removed it. My Vista has booting problems giving messages such as "Rebooting:Failure" before every startup, but it will always startup after those messages. So along as it starts up, its just fine.

I've discovered the problem. A quote from a LW dev:
"Facebook isn't supported with Friends for Mac ... just like you don't have the Store icon to see the LimeWire Store for Mac. It's a mozswing Mac support issue (at the moment)."
