LW5 will not connect

Okay, I have a MacBook with OSX 10.5.8. I don't have any extra firewalls except the regular system protection. I have had LimeWire for years and never had a problem--until I downloaded the new version (5.3.6). It simply will not connect.

I have literally read through all the potentially helpful forums and tried everything--changing my firewall settings, uninstalling and reinstalling LW, restarting my computer, turning my internet on and back off... everything that has been suggested to do, I have done. But no matter what, it still says "You are behind a firewall and do not support firewall transfers."

I connect through a wireless network, just a linksys router provided by my college dorm. Like I said, I have never had problems getting LW to connect before this new version, and I don't know what to change or fix to make it work. Any help would be greatlyyyy appreciated. Thanks!

Hi cardinal0015,

Sorry but I'm not a Mac user:)
Our Mac user is on holidays now but he might see your post when he gets back... so if you provide your system details it could help: System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

In the meantime, have you changed settings within LW's options (Command - Comma ,)... things like changing listening port? And disabling TLS? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

And have you tried deleting LW's preferences folder?: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/295239-post5.html

And have you tried reverting back to the version of LW that you were using prior to having problems? If not, which version of LW were you using?

1. OS version?
Mac OSX 10.5.8
2. What firewalls you have?
None except whatever comes with the Mac software
3. How much ram?
2G
4. Hard Disk space available?
181.58GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
wireless?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? (eg: Linksys WRT54Gv4)
All I know is Linksys
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)?
School-dorm
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ Click to see Sample image
*It's very important that you tell us whether you're using LW 5*
LW 5.3
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
??? Don't know this one.
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
it worked!
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
Not to my knowledge.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
New problem with experienced user.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image
If you're using LW5, there's no firewall icon. In LW go tools > advanced tools...there you'll see whether you're behind a firewall or not.
I am behind a firewall

14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
??? I don't know that one either
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall
None--except what is standard on Macs.
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland)
USA.
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc?
Nothing new has changed except that I downloaded the new version of LimeWire.

I have tried everything on that list--still it will not work.
I'm not sure which version of LimeWire I had previously, I think it may have been 4.10.something, but I'm not sure. How can I revert back to my old one?

When people suddenly have a connection problem after updating or upgrading LW, deleting the preferences folder is often the fix.
After you deleted the prefs folder, did all of LW's options revert back to defaults? If not then you know that the folder wasn't deleted properly & so try again. Remember that LW has to be properly closed first, otherwise the prefs folder won't be deleted.

I guess you have a wireless connection to the router? Is the router anywhere nearby so that you could have a look at it & find out the model number?

There are links for downloading older LW versions here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/mac-os...link-here.html

Your port test worked, so looks like your school's not blocking gnutella's default port... can other people at school use LW or other apps using the gnutella network (FrostWire, BearShare, Phex, Morpheus, GTK etc)?
