Why can't I open itunes?????

As a newbie to both LW and OS X, please be specific if you know how to help me out.

I downloaded LW and was playing around trying to get my files into itunes. Drag and drop didn't work, so I then went looking for, and found an itunes file within the LW library. I saved my songs to this folder thinking they would be there when I opened itunes up.

Wrong. I can't open itunes anymore. I get an unknown error and then a message that itunes is being automatically shutdown. I can't even play a cd anymore.

All of my songs that were in my itunes library are in the LW folder labled itunes, so it looks like I accoplished the opposite of what I was trying to do and disabled itunes in the process.

Now what? Should I uninstall LW and see if I get itunes back?

I also am having trouble with iTunes. When I purchased and downloaded Lime Wire Pro, I lost the iTunes software. I keep getting a message that says "iTunes library cannot be read because an unknown error occurred (-39). I also cannot even play any of my CD's. Does anyone have a solution? I am getting very frustrated with Lime Wire software.

Go get the most updated software from http://www.apple.com/itunes/
iTunes should ALWAYS reconise music files when you drop them onto it. It may be that you have a movie file or something that's not an audio file but is pretending to be one (Or it may be in an unsupported format). You could also delete the iTunes preferences. It would be nice to know exactly what version of OS X you have (10, 10.1, 10.0.3, 10.1.2, ect...) E-Mail me at kbotc@mac.com if you need more help.

THE BIG FIX

1. Find the iTunes Music Library file. In Mac OS 9, this file is normally located in the iTunes folder in your Documents folder. In Mac OS X, the iTunes Music Library is located in either the Documents or Music folders. These folders are located in your Home folder; choose Home from the Finder's Go menu.

2. Drag the iTunes Music Library file to the Trash.

3. Optional: Find the "com.apple.iTunes.plist" file in your Preferences folder (~/Library/Preferences) and drag it to the Trash. This will reset your iTunes preferences, and cause the iTunes Setup Assistant to open so iTunes can search for all your music files again.

4. Open iTunes. A new iTunes Music Library file is created. You may need to recreate your playlists, and manually add music files back into your library.

5. Grab yourself a gin and juice.

Fixing it

Thanks so much for this great and level-headed advice; I was in a mild and escalating panic earlier this evening, but followed your directions (although I couldn't find the setup assistant), and was able to drag my music folder right back into Itunes after deleting it. Now all's working perfectly again. Though this may be my first and only outing into Limewire;)
