Error Of Type 2
 

When ever I start up Limewire, I see the clock and then a message comes up that says-The application "Limewire" has unexpectedly quit becase an error of type 2 occurred. The program quits and I can never start it. I have a
266Mhz iMac
96MB ram
6 GB Hard drive


Please Help.

I am seeing the same problem. I ran ConflictCatcher's conflict test, and with all items disabled I still got the error, so it doesn't appear to be a software conflict, unless one of the basic system files is corrupted.

I first noticed the problem after trying to upgrade the free version from 2.5.5 to 2.6.0. When I tried to downgrade back to 2.5.5 I still had the problem, which I hadn't had before, so that's why I think there may be a system file corruption--but I don't want to re-install the system until I've exhausted all other possibilities. I even upgraded to Pro, v. 2.5.5, and the problem still exists!! :mad:

I noticed that the installer is giving me one "non-fatal" error:

My particulars are: OS 9.2.2 on a 7300 upgraded with a PowerLogix 360 MHz G3; 4 GB system HD with 500 MB free & 2 MB secondary HD; 400 MB RAM; VM disabled; Cable Modem--always on.

Have you tried increasing the memory allottment for the LimeWire application? That will usually fix the problem of Error Type 2.

Yes, I have tried increasing the memory allocation, all the way up to 100 MB, and still got the Type 2 error :(! A Type 2 error is not an out of memory error, though. Here's the description from Apple Error Codes '98:

ID=02 Address Error
The Motorola 68000 microprocessor can access memory in increments of one byte (8 bits), one word (16 bits), or one long word (32 bits). The microprocessor can access a byte of information at an odd or even memory address. But it must access a word or long word at an even memory address. So, when the microprocessor attempts to read or write a word or long word at an odd address, you see this error. Since that's a 50/50 proposition when running random code, this one shows up quite often.


I am in the process of going back through the archives and trying to see which versions DO work. So far, the pattern is not obvious. These work: 2.1.3, 2.3.1; these don't: 2.2.1, 2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.4.1--even though they do not give the install error I noted above. 2.5.5, 2.5.5 Pro, 2.6.3, and 2.6.3 Pro Beta all give the error on install, and all give the Type 2 error, even if installed immediately after one of the functional versions. AND, the functional versions work with the default 2 MB memory partition. :confused:

I plan to work up through the installers between 2.3.1 and 2.5.5 today and I'll post the results when I get them.

I use 2.4.4 and only had the problem when I first installed it until I increased the memory. Sometimes the CarbonLib extension can cause these types of problems. You need to make sure you have the correct version. The newer one's cause more conflicts. Not sure if it affects LimeWire. I know it does affect Quicken, for one.

Do you have a 68000 microprocessor? Those were in the older computers, I thought. This is what I find for OS 9 and what is in my Mac book: (Of course, it doesn't answer the question as to why you're still having the problem.)

The number codes in error messages are used in software development. The codes are usually too general or technical in nature to help you diagnose a problem yourself.

However, sometimes number codes can help a technician narrow down the source of a problem. When an error occurs, it's a good idea to make a note of the number code in case you need to refer to it later.

Type 1, 2, and 3 errors

Type 1, 2, and 3 errors indicate that your computer has run out of memory. You need to make more memory available.

Okay, I have to admit it was a little silly for me not to think about the error message--of course I don't have a 68k family processor. But you got it right that it didn't answer why I'm still having the problem. And since I had tried increasing the memory partition without success I was dubious about that being the cause. Yes, the link to Apple did help.

As my subject indicates, I have solved the problem, but there is no guarantee of its generality--or that this is even the only pathway. But it worked for me. I'll present the action and results in chronological order. I downloaded the installers from:

http://www3.limewire.com/download/

All installers were the No VM version (since I already have MRJ installed) and non-Pro unless otherwise indicated. Also, the memory partition was left at the default 2 MB except for the final step indicated.

Started with 2.5.5 installed, then:[list=1][*]Installed full-size 2.6.3. Got noted error on install. Got Type 2 error on execution.[*]Re-installed full-size 2.5.5. Got Install error. Got Type 2 error.[*]Installed full-size 2.4.1. No install error. Type 2 error.[*]Installed 2.1.3. No install error. No run error.[*]Installed 2.2.1. No install error. Type 2 error.[*]Installed 2.2.3. It's been running fine for 2 days now, so I'm a happy camper. :D As I said, there's no guarantee that this will work for everyone, or even anyone else, or that to get it to work all the steps are necessary. I'm guessing they're not. My rationale was merely to progress through the upgrades until it broke to see if I could isolate the culprit. Seems like 2.6.3 does something different, but the problem is not related to the install error.
