LimeWire Not Ready for Mac
 

LimeWire 1.4b for Mac is in itself a very good attempt for replacing "Napster", however my experience with the program on a Mac G4 has been nothing but disaster!! After 3 attempts with Ver. 1.3, and 4 attempts with 1.4b I have had nothing but Desktop and Finder corruption due to flawed programming. The longer I had the program installed the worse my machine ran. Pulling LW out and running Techtool Pro 3.0.3 and Norton 6.0 and replacing specific System files was my only salvation. Good backups of my Hard Drive were also key! It has been a very disappointing situation, because I to looked to LW as the answer to losing "Napster" I am running Mac OS 9.1, and MRJ 2.2.4! There is nothing wrong on my end. Unfortunately there are just to may flaws. My advice to Mac users is wait until the software is further debugged and refined. If you want to take chances that's fine, but understand the consequences. I will continue to try LW out as other versions are made available, but my advice to all is be carefull!!

I can´t resume downloads y sometimes my system hangs. I suspect that this sofware has SpyWare.

guys...have you tried 1.4b for os x? it requires to delve into the terminal (which i personally like...using unix at work, albeit on a basic level...but nonetheless...i love the command line...a LOT of power in there!)

i haven't tried the os 9.1 version, so i can't really compare...but there doesn't seem to be signs of corruption yet under os x...knock on wood since i've only been running it for about 1/2 hour by now...but i'm downloading an mp3 as we speak...so it doesn't seem that bad at all...still a little slow, being a java app and all ....but quite a bit snappier than furi on os9.1 which i could never find hosts on...limewire for os x finds hosts automatically...real cool

just in case...here are the basic steps to get limewire running in os x from the terminal window (command line)

1. d/l the file
2. open terminal window, and go to path of where file was d/l'ed
3. type "sh LimeWire.sh" (remember...unix is case sensitive)
4. message appears saying "Preparing to install..." (this will take a few minutes ...be patient and let it run...
5. window will appear...choose install folder/path
6. once completed...navigate from command line to LimeWire directory....
7. once in LimeWire directory...type "./LimeWire"
8. again, wait a few minutes...and the nice graphical interface of LimeWire will appear...the application is simply "java" as far as the finder is concerned...

I would cautiously disagree with this negative assessment. I am running OS 9.1 on an iMac DV+, and I have seen steady improvement in the last few Limewire releases. There are still problems, but fundamentally the software looks very impressive. At least, when I can SEE it....

The most vexing problem I've encountered has been a failure of the software to properly re-draw the active window, especially when switching from (say) "Search" to "Connections," then back again.

As a non-techie user, it's hard for me to assess how much of this problem lies with LimeWire itself, and how much arises from the Mac's implementation of Java. In any case, the LimeWire team appears to have been trying to rectify the problems, and the situation has improved considerably since version 1.2, the first one I tried.

My own feeling is that we should be supportive of this very worthy and ambitious cross-platform undertaking. I am grateful to the LimeWire folks for continuing to support the Mac platform.

seems like a good app to me, running on an pre g3 power mac using os 8.6 for about 20 hours total.

it appears stable, even running beside active netscape, rapster, photoshop, and soundjam!

no evident corruption to remainder of the system to date (2 weeks).

there are some bugs with the file sharing library, with it's ability to recognise certain imported files as well as some shortcommings with the GUI but on balance not critical. oh yeah, it is damn slow loading and getting up to usable speed, up to 5 min.

otherwise, i like it!

I still use Napster, works just fine for me (although it has gotten harder to find songs).

I don't know about all you OS 9 users, but Limewire runs FLAWLESSLY under Mac OS X. You really should think about updating. OS 9 is the past. OS X is the future. Update already.

scrod...i coulnd't agree more with you!!!! i've also been running lw under os x (check my post above) for the past 3 days and it's been running great!!!

just goes to show the power, stability, and ease of porting of unix. os x is definately the way to go...

Doesn't even instal
 

2 Downloads and 4 instals only resulted in stuff (folders, log documents) in my trash - what I take to be a failure to instal for some unknown reason. The logs could have been a bit more informative as to what was happening. All I can say is that such a result is better than a crash. Any ideas?
