My Mac ain't playin mp3s

I just downloaded Limewire and found an mp3 and a quicktime video I wanted. The quicktime works fine, but when I click on Launch for the mp3 absolutely nothing happens. I thought there was an mp3 player installed w/ Limewire? I have a mac g3 laptop w/ OS9.1, Quicktime and Windows Media Player (which I'm having trouble running cos it always wants more RAM than I seem to have.) When I installed Limewire I got a message saying there'd been some errors. Is this it? I'm new to this, a little confused, quite excited. Heeeelp...

There is no mp3 player in the Mac version of Limewire, since we have iTunes and any number of quite good mp3 players available.

What do the icons of your downloaded mp3's look like? QuickTime, Real, iTunes or generic? Either way, the easiest solution is to get a freeware program at versiontracker.com called "iTunes Associator". This will fix the creator/file type automatically so the files open in iTunes. You can also do this at your leisure in the File Exchange control panel, though sometimes LW overrides these prefs.

Note, however, that there are a few kinds of Windows-ripped mp3's that iTunes won't play, though Audion and some of the others might.

Generic MP3 Downloads

Hello,
I've noticed the same issue. However, under LW 1.8, the "launch" button worked because all mp3 files "associated" themselves with QuickTime 5. After I upgraded to LW 2.5, all mp3 downloads now show up as "generic", no association to an application. Why this is happening in a newer version of LW is a mystery.

In order to play the mp3 file now, I have to manually start QuickTime, then open the file (under QT) in order for it to play. Otherwise, I must now double-click on the "generic" mp3 file where a window appears asking me which applic to "associate" it with. Once I do that, I'm able to here the file. From there on, I can "launch" (from LW Shared dir) to here the song since it now has association.

Seems like a bug in LW 2.5.5.

Update To My Previous Reply!!!!

The fix to your problem is found in my post labeled "Fixing Generic mp3's That Won't Play".

After making this adjustment to your system, your mp3's WILL download in association to whatever player you choose and thus play when you hit the "Launch" button.

or just download itunes. and figure out how to use "add to library" all u gotta do is open itunes, hit add to library, it'll ask u where to find the file u want to add, choose macintosh hd(hard drive icon, then select ur shared folder destination, which will be ...mac hd/system folder/preferences/ shared...by default on LW2.5.5(newest version...other wise it will be mac hd/applications/limewire/shared for anything below 2.5.5, then u just click the file which will be listed under the shared directory and hit choose...then it will be transfered to itunes, which is like juke box or a really large mp3 player. then u can listen to your song and even keep it under your library. thats it, mac is easy, u just gotta ask around, good luck and lemme know how things went.
