The mp3s I've been downloading are suddenly in an "smil" format that quicktime doesn't understand. I used to be able to play them fine. Does anyone know what has caused this?

Try itunes Associator which usually makes most valid mp3s readable for Quicktime (or itunes).
I have no idea what smil format is. |

I think .smil or .sml is a Real Player something or other.
