Default LW Crashes if Another App is Accessed During Download

I am running LimeWire 2.6.5 on an iBook running OS 9.2.1. With this version (as well as previous versions), downloading works fine as long as I don't switch to another application while LimeWire is running. If I do try to access another application, LimeWire crashes with a Type 2 error. In addition, all the drop down menus (for all apps including the Finder) lose the ability to access submenus (i.e., when you click on a drop down menu, there are no right arrows to let you choose the next menu). Very bizarre! Any thoughts?
