Java Memory Allocation

I have read in several posts that, in order to insure LW runs well, one should download and install the latest MRJ, then assign more memory to it.

Well ... how does one go about that memory adjustment?

All I can find on my hard disk relating to Java are a bunch of extensions and cache files for which, of course, you cannot change the memory allocation. As far as I can tell, there is no "mother application" which can be adjusted.

So, I'm totally confused about this (only one thing among many). Would someone help me understand this, please.
